MELBOURNE: Pakistan bagged its first win in the Champions Trophy after defeating Belgium 2-0 in the second Pool B match in Melbourne on Sunday.
Pakistan made amends for Saturday’s disappointing 3-1 loss to the Netherlands with their first win over Belgium.
The result leaves the Belgians as the only winless team in Pool B while Pakistan still have a chance to finish on top of the pool.
After a goalless first half, Pakistan lifted their tempo after half time, and a goal to Abdul Haseem Khan was followed by another from Shafqat Rasool to put the result beyond doubt.
“Yesterday we actually played good hockey but we missed our chances. Today we missed some chances but we managed to score as well, so this is very good experience for our young players,” Shakeel Abbasi said.

Two of Pakistan's experienced hands guided them to victory in their first game in almost three months, and their first bilateral tour of India in five years. An early burst from debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who began his international career with a fabulous display of swing bowling, rattled the Pakistan top order but the calm presence of Mohammad Hafeez and some enterprising batting from Shoaib Malik put a chase of 134 back on track.

Ajmal wins four Pakistan cricket awards

Offspinner Saeed Ajmal swept four trophies in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s first ever awards ceremony on Saturday.
The PCB protested Ajmal’s absence from last year’s International Cricket Council world player awards, but made up for it somewhat by judging him the best bowler in Tests, One-day Internationals and Twenty-20s. He also received a special prize for the best bowler of 2012. He was the world’s top-ranked bowler in ODIs and Twenty-20s last year.
“To be named the best for the year from such a special group... for me this is out of this world,” Ajmal said. “It took me 16 years to reach this point in my life.”
Pakistan ODI captain Mohammad Hafeez was named player of the year; Azhar Ali picked as Test player of the year and left-handed opening batsman Nasir Jamshed was chosen best ODI batsman.
Young left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan received the emerging player award.
Ahsan Raza, who was severely injured during the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus at Lahore in 2009, received the trophy for the best umpire of the year.
Lifetime achievement awards were handed to Hanif Mohammad, who played Tests from 1952-69, and wicket keeper-batsman Imtiaz Ahmed.
“Having been involved for such a long time with cricket, and having received so many awards, this still tops them all,” Hanif said.
All the award winners received rupees 200,000 while Ajmal received additional rupees 1.5 million for his special prize. Ajmal said he would donate all of his prize money to his cricket academy in his hometown Faisalabad.
The PCB also rewarded the team which clinched the recent one-day series against arch rival India 2-1 and drew the Twenty-20 series 1-1.
Each player of the team was awarded rupees 500,000 while fast bowlers Mohammad Irfan, Khan, Jamshed, Ajmal and Hafeez were given additional rupees 500,000 for their outstanding performances in the series.

Pakistan hockey stars out of new India league

Nine Pakistani players were on Tuesday withdrawn from a new hockey league in India and asked to return home in the wake of protests following border tension between the arch-rivals.
None of the Pakistanis featured in the opening match of the Hockey India League (HIL) in New Delhi on Monday and officials said they will not take part in the entire four-week event.
“Due to extraordinary circumstances, it has been decided to send the nine Pakistan players home,” Hockey India chief and the league’s main organiser Narinder Batra told reporters in New Delhi.
“The interests of the players will be protected and they will be paid the full fees due to them. It was a mutual decision between us and the Pakistan Hockey Federation.”
The 34-match HIL, sanctioned by the sport’s world governing body, features top stars from around the world playing for five city-based franchises till February 10.
The cities in the fray are New Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Ranchi and Jalandhar.
Four Pakistanis, Mahmood Rashid, Fareed Ahmed, Muhammad Tousiq and Imran Butt, were hired by Mumbai. The others were Mohammed Rizwan senior and Mohammed Rizwan junior (Delhi), Kashif Shah (Jalandhar), and Muhammed Irfan and Shafqat Rasool (Ranchi).
Trouble began on Sunday in Mumbai when the city’s franchise was forced to cancel its team’s practice session after protests from the right-wing nationalist Shiv Sena party.
The entire squad, coached by Australian Ric Charlesworth, shifted base to New Delhi as league organisers speculated whether Mumbai could host the six matches allotted to it, the first one scheduled for January 20.
“I have no idea what will happen, but it will not be easy to play the matches in Mumbai if the Pakistanis are there,” Mumbai Hockey Association official Ram Singh told AFP earlier on Tuesday.
Tensions between India and Pakistan were heightened last week by a series of cross-border exchanges in disputed Kashmir in which four soldiers were killed.
Meanwhile, media reports on Tuesday said the women’s cricket World Cup, scheduled to be played in Mumbai from January 31 to February 17, could be affected due to Pakistan’s participation.
The Pakistani women are due to play three matches in the preliminary league of the eight-nation event and at least another four if they advance to the second round.
The Indian Express newspaper quoted unnamed sources as saying Pakistan’s matches could be moved to Ahmedabad, which last month hosted a One-day International between the men’s teams of the two nations. There was no immediate comment from the International Cricket Council on the report.
