I strongly recommend you not to join if you have any other job in hand. The responsibilities are magnanimous with hardly any perk and privileges, the only perk is unlawful earning which is not desirable for any competent candidate. Imagine you will have to spend the rest of your life not only dealing but also living with criminals, as Deputy Superintendent jail can not leave jail premises, it is mandatory for ASJ, DSJ and Superintendent to resides inside the jail quarters. Forget weekends and any other public holiday,You are now married to the jail.
It is an extremely sensitive job, if a tree fall inside a jail premises, DSJ is held accountable and can be suspended for it. If an inmate dies in jail, termination is confirm. Withholding pay, suspension, deducting increment on menial affairs is a routine matter in jail. and more importantly, the authority of DSJ is inside the jail premises, outside jail no body knows you and care about you. If you are already having a job, you are a free man, enjoy your life, its just a humble advice, If you are jobless, then you must join it

ASJ also can't leave jail premises and he must resides inside the jail even if his own home is yard apart from jail. Responsibilities of ASJ and DSJ are same according to Pakistan prison rules. Its 24 hours job, ASJ perform night duty thrice a week depending on strength of ASJ's in speciafic jail, but jail department is always deficient of officers, so three days fix night and day duty as well as four days regular day duty in a week. Promotion is slowest, it takes 8-12 years for ASJ(BPS-14) to get promoted to ASJ(BPS-16). duties and responsibilities of ASJ(BPS-16) are same as ASJ(BPS-14), and another 15 years to get promoted to DSJ(BPS-17). DSJ(BPS-17) promotes to SJ(BPS-18) in 8-10 years. futher the promotion stops. currently there are only two SJ of BPS-19 in kpk prison department, they are in BPS-19 because they were previously directly inducted into BPS-18 as SJ. The misery of KPK prison department is that it is headed by BPS-20 officer who is not from Jail staff.

Furthermore ASJ upgradation to BPS-17 is in pipeline in punjab prison department. ASJ in punjab is even better than Superintendent of kpk jails. My friend is serving as ASJ in chakwal jail, punjab.
