pls dont confuse the use of sentences . u r right with use of was , will with I and yes we cant use am with I always but when required .i was talkin in regard to example given above

my pupils as well as i are doing this work .

i also came to know

when two subjects are separated by "and " then use of "are" with "I" is ok .

like

Sana and I are playing.

but in case of "as well as " we are referring to entities at their indiviual level not combined by and so "I" can go wid "am "

e.g:
My pupils as well as I are doing this work [ dis is correct too ]

my pupils as well as I am doing this work . [dis is correct as well and i am more sure abt this one ]

and yes zobia has put fwd another gud suggestion .

and dr arif rana is cant be use with I in this case .
