@ H.E
after reading all above posts, now i am more confused. actually here is not "pupil" here is "pupils" the plueral. the sentence was " my pupils as well as i am doing this work" here i think another solution. what if we do it like it? "my pupils as well as myself are doing this work" Regards, |

Please note that there are certain conditions where we deviate from the simple rules which we have learned in our early classes. Like we have learned that "were" is not used with "I" only "was" is used with "I" but there comes a situation where "were" suites better with "I" and "was" doesn't. Like: Would that I were president of Pakistan. (Correct) but "Would that I was president of Pakistan. (Incorrect) Similarly we have learned that "shall" is used with "I" and "will" is not used with "I" but there comes a situation where "will" suites better with "I" and "shall" doesn't suite there. Like: when we want to show extra emphasis (conformity): I will do this work. (Correct) In the same way we can't always attach "am" with "I". Think over the structure of sentence and then attach proper helping verb. In: My pupils as well as I are doing this work. "are" is not used only for "I" but refers to a different scenario. My pupils as well as I are doing this work. (Correct) |

thanks fo sharing raz but ....
pls dont confuse the use of sentences . u r right with use of was , will with I and yes we cant use am with I always but when required .i was talkin in regard to example given above
my pupils as well as i are doing this work . i also came to know when two subjects are separated by "and " then use of "are" with "I" is ok . like Sana and I are playing. but in case of "as well as " we are referring to entities at their indiviual level not combined by and so "I" can go wid "am " e.g: My pupils as well as I are doing this work [ dis is correct too ] my pupils as well as I am doing this work . [dis is correct as well and i am more sure abt this one ] and yes zobia has put fwd another gud suggestion . and dr arif rana is cant be use with I in this case . regards H.E

@ H.E and those concerned : Perhaps you have not read my refrence, or if you have read ;you have not properly digested its crux. let me briefly sum up this discussion.
Following both are correct sentences according to the rule i have mentioned in my earlier post Correct : my pupils, as well as i, am doing this work. Correct : my pupils as well as i are doing this work. yes ! both of above sentences are correct. but note the difference in the form of composition; first sentence is separated out by comma marks ,whereas the other one does not have any commas. This means, in simple language, that Comma decides in which way we are speaking! so that the subject can be taken as plural or singular as the case may be in the form of our intonation. This is indeed a very delicate difference, and, i can understand why its so confusing. but this is the rule as per source link as mentioned by me and mohsin shah. i hope this helps regards keep me in prayers.

dr.atifrana I have objection over "of"
I think this sentence requires usage of Prepositions of place like "in" and "at". |
