خودي کي شوخي و تندي ميں کبر و ناز نہيں
جو ناز ہو بھي تو بے لذت نياز نہيں

نگاہ عشق دل زندہ کي تلاش ميں ہے
شکار مردہ سزاوار شاہباز نہيں

مري نوا ميں نہيں ہے ادائے محبوبي
کہ بانگ صور سرافيل دل نواز نہيں

سوال مے نہ کروں ساقي فرنگ سے ميں
کہ يہ طريقہ رندان پاک باز نہيں

ہوئي نہ عام جہاں ميں کبھي حکومت عشق
سبب يہ ہے کہ محبت زمانہ ساز نہيں

اک اضطراب مسلسل ، غياب ہو کہ حضور
ميں خود کہوں تو مري داستاں دراز نہيں

اگر ہو ذوق تو خلوت ميں پڑھ زبور عجم
فغان نيم شبي بے نوائے راز نہيں


Translation

Selfhood is daring in power, but has no pride,
If pride there be, it is mingled with modesty.

Love always seeks a heart alive and brave,
The eagle hates to look at a lifeless prey.

My verse is neither soft nor gentle in tone,
It is the trumpet’s sound on the day of doom.

I will not ask the West to inspire my song.
For the pure in soul despise a borrowed light.

My story is brief and simple to relate,
A constant anxiety, both in the absence and presence.
