August 13, 2006:


1) Iraq's health minister, who is aligned to a powerful Shiite militia, claimed Sunday that U.S. forces arrested seven of his personal guards in a surprise pre-dawn raid on his office. The reason for the alleged arrests was unclear. (AP via Yahoo! News)


2) Three successive explosions killed 20 people and wounded more than 70 Sunday night in a mostly Shiite neighborhood in southern Baghdad, police said. (Washington Post)


August 14, 2006:


1) Iraq could be stabilized faster if the United States increased the size of its force, but the costs would outweigh the benefits, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff said Sunday. (AP via Yahoo! News)


2) Through proxies, Iran is giving weapons, bomb technology and training to Shiite Muslim militias in Iraq, U.S. military officials said Monday. (Washington Post)

August 15, 2006:


1) Rival visions of how to halt the carnage in Iraq have been put on show as US troops built walls around a restive suburb of Baghdad and a Shiite leader announced a plan to set up local militias. (AFP via Yahoo! News)


2) A suicide bomber killed nine people outside the headquarters of the Iraqi president's political party in northern Iraq, while fierce fighting between Shiite gunmen and Iraqi security forces left at least seven people dead in the south. (CBS News)
