August 3, 2006:


1) The UK's outgoing ambassador to Baghdad warned government ministers that a civil war in Iraq is more likely than a successful transition to democracy, according to a news report. (CNN.com)


2) The Pentagon is trying to convince lawmakers that the war in Iraq is not breaking the Army and that extending the tours of some troops is necessary to quell increasing violence in the region. (AP via Yahoo! News)


3) Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso announced his country was giving Iraq a 3.5 billion yen (30 million dollars, 23.8 million euros) loan for reconstruction during a visit to Baghdad. (AFP via Yahoo! News)


August 4, 2006:


1) A German prosecutor is investigating the possibility that an American contractor who was ordered to pay the government millions of dollars for cheating on a contract in Iraq may be using his wife to funnel money through foreign bank accounts, according to a letter from the prosecutor. August 5, 2006:


1) Two dozen people died in a surge of violence in northern Iraq, including 10 at a soccer game hit by a suicide car bombing, police said Friday, while the country's spiraling sectarian and political bloodshed killed at least 17 others elsewhere. (AP via Yahoo! News)


August 6, 2006:


1) Iraq is not on track to become another Iran despite the disconcerting images last week of Iraqis burning U.S. flags and chanting "Death to America," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday. (AP via Yahoo! News)

1) A suicide bomber blew himself up Wednesday outside a police headquarters in northern Iraq, killing at least one person, while British officials said a barrage of mortars hit one of their bases in the south. (AP via Yahoo! News)

1) Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), once an ardent supporter of the war in Iraq, said yesterday that the Bush administration should set a time frame for withdrawing U.S. troops. He added that most of the withdrawal could take place next year. (Washington Post)
