China backs Pakistan on global issues

BEIJING, May 14: Chinese scholars and members of “think-tank” have commended Sino-Pak strategic partnership and said it has developed well in the recent years to meet common aspirations of the people of the two countries. They noted that while upholding decades-old Sino-Pak affiliation, Pakistan has also successfully improved its relations with the United States and other important countries of the world.

Huang Hua, President of China Association of International Friendly Contact, Ma Zhengeng, President of China Institute of International Studies and Zhang Yannong and Editor-in-Chief of state-run newspaper the Peoples Daily spoke highly of Sino-Pak friendship during their separate meetings held here with Pakistan Ambassador to China Salman Bashir this week.

They observed that President Pervez Musharraf and his government had successfully handled important regional and global issues in the wake of war against terrorism. This helped the country to earn a respectable place in comity of the nations.

Old and new generations of Chinese attach great importance to their relationship with Pakistan and are prepared to take further steps to deepen their mutually beneficial cooperative partnership at all levels, they added.

Huang, 92-year old scholar formerly known as Wang Rumei, who worked as country’s state counsellor and foreign minister during 1969-76, said Chinese leaders and people held Pakistan in high esteem for its constructive and positive role in the regional affairs. Pakistan’s efforts for peace and development were highly commendable, he added.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held a reception at the Great Hall of the Peoples last night for members of diplomatic corps and briefed them about the recent visit of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao to South and East Asian countries.

He reiterated that China would continue to work closely with the regional countries, adopting an identical position on global issues, including the UN reforms.

Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai highlighted China’s tremendous economic progress on the occasion, stating the country’s GDP and foreign reserves had reached $1.6 trillion and $699.9 million respectively.—APP

China hails Pakistan becoming SCO observers

BEIJING, June 8 (APP): China welcomes and supports Pakistan becoming observers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jinchao said.

At a SCO foreign ministers' meeting held last Saturday in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, SCO member states agreed in principle to give Pakistan SCO observer status.

The SCO will make a formal decision to this effect at the forthcoming SCO summit, scheduled to be held in Astana in July.

"We also welcome India and Iran to join the organization as observer," Liu said adding these are influential countries in the region, and China believes it will further promote mutual cooperation between them and the SCO.

The foreign ministers at the meeting discussed further promoting SCO cooperation and preparations for the forthcoming SCO summit, and they also exchanged views on other international and regional issues.

The SCO, set up in June 2001 to promote regional cooperation and fight terrorism, extremism and separatism, groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

China hails Pakistan's support on Taiwan issue

BEIJING, June 9 (APP): China hails Pakistan's consistent position on the question of Taiwan, stating the two countries have always been supporting each other on the matters relating to their national integrity and sovereignty.

"China attaches great importance to Pakistan and other regional countries for their support on Taiwan issue," this was stated by a spokesman of Taiwan Affairs office of the State Council, while briefing the visiting journalists from the South Asian countries.

He noted that over 160 countries of the world recognize and support China's position on the question of Taiwan. "We highly value the backing of the South Asian countries on the issue of their national interest," he added.

While reaffirming China's policy about peaceful settlement of the issue, he said the mainland is prepared to give maximum autonomy to Taiwan.

Taiwan as an integral part of China, can maintain its existing political and economic set-up like Hong Kong, he added.

Replying to a question, the spokesman said Beijing was prepared to go a long way toward meeting Taiwanese concerns about reunification, if only the island's leaders definitively dropped any talks of independence.

Several issues were successful handled at the time of China's takeover of Hong Kong and Macao. China, for example, does not permit its citizens to hold dual citizenship, which many in Macao held before the transfer of power from Portugal. Beijing decreed that the Macao residents would hold only Chinese passports, but could keep any "international travel documents" they had held previously.

The "One China-Two Systems" formula used for hyper-capitalist Hong Kong could be adapted for Taiwan, the spokesman contended. "The Chinese government may consider giving the autonomy more than that accepted in case of Hong Kong.

A Pakistani official told APP in an interview that they appreciate the efforts made by China for reunification of Taiwan to the motherland and considers the recently passed Anti-Secession Law as part of these efforts.

Reiterated the principle stand of the Pakistani government adhering to one China policy, he said, "We are among the countries who earliest issued statement supporting the law."
