Well, my limited observations, regarding the choice & way of attempting an essay, are:

1. Select the one, about which you feel confident that you have sufficient amount of knowledge.

2. You should have atleast two-three different views specifically, if the essay is on Current Affairs/International Relations/ Politics/ Global Scenarios or Problems/.

3. GOOD--START & END. (First impression is the last impression).

4. Organize it before start: Introduction, Main Content (narrow-down to objectives), Summary. Conclusion & recommendations if required.

5. Must have sufficient amount of words in your stock (Vocabulory).

6. High-sounding or bombastic style does not ASURE your quality writing.

7. Avoid long sentences.

8. VERY IMP: Sentence beauty means; use of proper punctuations, appropriate use of grammer, idioms & phrases, quotations counts a lot.
