Note: The proverb
"One may smile and smile and be a villain" means that it is not necessary those who are showing their kindness with a smiling face and consoling promises are actually be so. Might be they are treacherous with some selfish ends hidden in their hearts. The truth debunks when they deceive their friends in need.
One may smile and smile and be a villain
A wise one has rightly said, "All that glitters is not gold." Similarly, it is not necessary that one promising to be the true friend must actually be so. Besides individual consideration, on macro level, developing states are routinely the victims of false pledges of the developed ones. The long lasting friendship boosts are nothing less than vanishing sun; for instance, several of the US presidents stood with a glaring smile beside Pakistani head of the states by saying, "Pakistan is our closest ally." However, history is replete with the time testing crisis when Pakistan needed the US. In 1965 war with India, the US refused to provide help for Pakistan. Likewise, this always smiling friend did nothing to save half of Pakistan from disintegration. It imposed sanction upon Pakistan and used its influence to cancel out nuclear reactor deal between Pakistan and France, but did nothing when India exploded nuclear bomb in 1974. Again, as a true friend, it came back to Pakistan in 1979 and pledged support against the Soviet with the same smiling face. Later, the defeat of the USSR 1989, it put sanctions on Pakistan with false pretexts. After September 11, 2001, attack on World Trade Centre, this selfish as well as always smiling and shining face friend asked for Pakistan's help against Terrorism. Today, at the decline of "war on terrorism", the US is explicitly threatening to attack on Pakistan sovereignty. The US has deceived Pakistan throughout the history with a smile and cannot be trusted in future. To put it briefly, one may smile and smile, and be a villain. (266)
