Pardon me for replying to a post that describes much of what I have been through, too. Well more or less, if we are going for details. But let's not go there.

What interests me the most is you want to do what you really want to, but have been stuck for half an year. Which is what many a people go through, too.

My advice, as a 28 years old dad and a seasoned juggler of jobs, would be to reconsider your approach to the problem, i.e. CSS isn't the only other option you have.

And I am sure others would have much better advice, but that's what I think.
