Time required to prepare would depend, to a great extent, on your interest in the subject. If you really like it and you are aiming for the 60-70 marks bracket, I would say it may take approximately three months (considering you are also preparing other subjects alongside geo).

Regarding your second question, my personal opinion is that science subjects such as geography are always good to opt because if you write what is correct, there is no reason to deduct your marks. In other words, you can impress the examiner easily, given that you have prepared well.
