Reality
A rather immature question. Private companies are driven by profit and loss not by selfless public service. Money is certainly necessary but it should not be the sole reason for joining the civil services. Since politicians and bureaucrats look for themselves and their petty self interests then who is there left to serve the general population? Don't you think our country is where it is right now due to such self serving mentality.
The money used to run those public offices which offer "selfless public service" is generated by those petty selfish private companies. Sorry for being little harsh.

Dear friends,
This interesting discussion compelled me go say something about civil service!
I have been in govt service for more than 10 years and served at various posts.
I am recently posted in a Pakistan embassy abroad and on a position where I can have a detailed and intimate view of our bureaucracy/FSP.
Believe me, with exception of a few, there is no such thing as "Serving the nation/country" in any corner of their hearts in bureaucrats/diplomats! The only thing they desire is: how to win their boss confidence. They are too busy in competing their colleagues in becoming "the most obedient servant" of their Ambassador. They know no creativity whatever the Amb. said is taken and implemented in spirits. They act like kings in their fiefdoms for their subordinates and humiliates them and general public whenever. They are always hungry for money and promotion. They become hypocites and mean. They feel it a disgrace to follow financial or administration rules and act like "Aqal-e-Qul"
So, whatever they may be but they are not "Public Servants"!
One last thing: if you be able to see how they misuse public fund for their benefits, you could not sleep!
I am still in BS-17 and I don't claim 8 years of service on my credit, but Alhamdulillah I have 17 kanal fully furnished house, 4 vehicles with POL including Prado TX, Vigo and Land Cruiser! I don't mention other things but I just mentioned the things that the person in question mentioned. I don't know where he works but myself and my batch mates are extremely satisfied with everything we have.
Finally, I got to know what satisfaction really means by reading the comment of a PAS officer. As you yourself have stated that you and your friends are extremely satisfied followed by the disclosure of your perks here. It means that these perks make you feel satisfied and this is actually the first impression I got from reading your comment. And if we follow this same principle, then the guy Imran Khan is right that he has just wasted his time and he is not satisfied with his job as he’s not getting any perks even after having served for 8 years in government.

Secondly, I don’t know what made you talk of your perks here as you are a PAS officer and he is in fact not. If he was and had the same years of service as you did then it would be fine to see you comparing yourself with him. 80% of your comment is irrelevant, and I am sorry for saying all this as I can’t see an apple being compared with an orange.
I'm a PAS officer dear, and if I am given a chance 1000 times I would always choose PAS.
I have heard a soldier saying it for the martyrdom in the line of duty but never heard of anyone saying it for a job like this. You are over excited bro, keep yourself calm.
Who cannot join it must not discourage others.
Nobody is discouraging anybody. You are not supposed to tell what one must do and must not.

Yes CSS is really worth it.

I am working as a full time faculty member in one of the Public Sector Universities of KPK. I get a 70 plus salary, i only work 8 months an year, weekends are off, there is no pressure no huge responsibility nothing.

But still I am not satisfied!.

Why??

I believe that as compared to civil services, academia does not provide me with enough opportunities to change social issues that have made me suffer throughout my life from the deteriorating health sector to government's apathetic attitude towards education and other important things.

I believe that while being an academic the only people i can influence is my class of 20-30, if i joined civil services my right decisions made in public interest would provide instant relief to people and my innetiatives can surely bring a change in the lives of people.

I have a dream to wake up to a new challenge everyday a daily fight against some land mafia, a daily struggle against narco traffickers, daily resistance towards everything that in some way affects people's lives.

I would not get these three months off, neither would i get free weekends, i may even be deprived of my family time too but then I am ready for sacrificing all this just for the sake of bringing a small change in my little capacity.

And i know the way is going to be hard, not everybody has the ability to ace through life threats and continuous pressures but when I retire I would surely have a bundle of stories to tell my grand kids about the complete life that i led, the role i played in betterment of my country and so on.

CSS is not about vehicles perks privileges and things of this sort, it is about playing your role as a member of society, academia isnot providing me with this opportunity so I am switching my career.

Side note:

For people who are going for PHDs must think again. Pakistani Higher education is rotten to the core, the system in all universities is stagnant, there is no academic freedom, every year the quality of students is depreciating . The life is monotonous and there is a growing feeling of being wasted .

I had my life at academia and no matter you call CSS a waste of time and the job good for nothing I would still switch to it for playing the role I know I have the ability to play.

Love and respects,

Well, I can smell the frustration...... I am very sorry to say that but let me clarify this to you, the role you're hoping to play, after becoming a civil servant, is far removed from the reality. You'd better consult a serving civil servant. I can say it with 99.99% surety that the buried inside your fantasies is your ego: your frustration starts when you start comparing your position with a civil servant. Right! Your post personify our state of mind as a nation of a third world... It's only teachers (especially of the HEIs) that can bring a positive change in the society. Education means 'positive change of behaviour' if you can't carry out this change, you're failing as a teacher. Why don't you struggle against the bad things in your university, the women harassers who don't even shy to harass their own students et al. Civil Service is not the way you're thinking it is! It's governed by rules and regulations and owing to the prevailing system here, you won't be able to do any of the mentioned things as you don't have the guts for it. You'll be the same frustrated person like you're now. If you're failing in your profession as a teacher you'll fail in the civil service for sure. Nobody in the civil service is there to serve the people rather to satisfy their own inflated egos. Respect!

It ultimately comes down to our own choices. Some one doing CSS should know what he is getting himself into: Being part of a corrupt system in which he can't change things much.

CSS is not the be-all end-all as it hyped up to be. We only get to hear about CSS and how people drool over it, but frankly there are other jobs which are much better in their incentives and satisfaction levels. Here's an example: Oil & gas sector.

Here is the short list of perks you get in oil & gas sector:

1- You work less than half the year. That's right. You work in a rotation where after 15 or 21 days, you get an equal number of days off. And once you are on days off, you go to your home and do whatever it is you want to do for the rest of the 15 or 21 days. And of course, there are other leaves too.

2- It pays a LOT. Nobody earns as low as a CSS officer. Your salary either starts at 1+ lac, or reaches there within a year.

3- You are not involved in any corruption. You do honest days work. Go to your loving family. And sleep like a baby.

4- You get to live in any city of Pakistan that you want. You get to send your kids to the best of schools and universities.

It is not too shabby of a deal to be honest. But nobody here is aspiring to be in such sectors. It's a shame.

sir you are very judgmental and very negative, instead of logical argumentation you are judging me about the personality type that i have or the traumas that i suffer from. Kindly just do not make personal attacks.

You have not served in any HEI so you know nothing about it and neither do you know about bureaucracy. You have never known me, nor you know how efficient am I in my duty, how on earth can you call me a failing teacher. There are hundreds of officers who struggle daily for providing relief to ordinary citizens, you are free to call our good intentions a mere fantasy, well to tell you the truth every great thing that this world ever saw was once a dream that then transformed into reality.

Kindly just don't spread pessimism among new aspirants who genuinely want to work for this country, the best service you can do currently is to appreciate the good intentions we the young aspirants are having and it would be even more appreciable if you instead of showing us the darker side, guide us in our pursuits.

We people come to this forum for discussing new ideas and to learn things, it is people like you who's bullying attitude stops us from commenting on the forum, if you do not like any idea just ignore it. Please do not judge. Please do not make personal attacks.

No

Is CSS really worth putting in all the labours of mind and heart?

The answer, for newcomers, is NO because one must put all the labours of mind and heart in something that is CERTAIN. CSS is one of the most uncertain things that we knoe ,and I am sure no one doubts the uncertainty level of CSS.

I think its how one looks at things. Everything is uncertain in life. Life itself is uncertain. I am alive today making furture plans and what not but I could die tomorrow. That is the epitome of uncertainty in my humble opinion. That shouldn't stop someone from working towards his/her aspirations.

Each to their own.
