agreed ,but we should take better decisions; there is a term Cost-Benefit analysis of every project. Cost is much more higher for 97% of the candidates with no return keeping aside the mental trauma

I believe that as compared to civil services, academia does not provide me with enough opportunities to change social issues that have made me suffer throughout my life from the deteriorating health sector to government's apathetic attitude towards education and other important things.

I believe that while being an academic the only people i can influence is my class of 20-30, if i joined civil services my right decisions made in public interest would provide instant relief to people and my innetiatives can surely bring a change in the lives of people.

I have a dream to wake up to a new challenge everyday a daily fight against some land mafia, a daily struggle against narco traffickers, daily resistance towards everything that in some way affects people's lives.

I would not get these three months off, neither would i get free weekends, i may even be deprived of my family time too but then I am ready for sacrificing all this just for the sake of bringing a small change in my little capacity.

And i know the way is going to be hard, not everybody has the ability to ace through life threats and continuous pressures but when I retire I would surely have a bundle of stories to tell my grand kids about the complete life that i led, the role i played in betterment of my country and so on.

CSS is not about vehicles perks privileges and things of this sort, it is about playing your role as a member of society, academia isnot providing me with this opportunity so I am switching my career.

Pakistani Higher education is rotten to the core, the system in all universities is stagnant, there is no academic freedom, every year the quality of students is depreciating . The life is monotonous and there is a growing feeling of being wasted .

I had my life at academia and no matter you call CSS a waste of time and the job good for nothing I would still switch to it for playing the role I know I have the ability to play.

Is this not pessimism? If a teacher is feeling like vanquished/disappointed then who should we blame for the deteriorating state of our young generation? You're a role model and if you start posting these sorts of comments, you can't blame me for pessimism! Always remember! "A teacher effects eternity, at no point s/he can say where does her/his influence stops". Be optimistic!

Well, my dear brother, I am so sorry if you got offended by my comments! But I was referring to the general state of things. The quality of being judgmental has been bestowed upon me by my society and my teachers' influence, those teachers were just like you (no offense intended). Though I don't have a university job experience but I have a 12 years association with one of my province's top universities and have been observing things there since 2005. I'm not bullying you, who am I? zilch! The conclusions, you're referring to, is the very data you've provided me, but in its processed form. About the fantasies part, I have been working for the provincial government since three and a half years and it's my 4th job, I've worked for the federal government too, whatever I'm sharing here is from my personal experience. Though I'm not a bureaucrat but I've been observing it from a vantage point since long. If at any point you need my helping hand, do let me know, I'm here to help you out.And generate some optimism inside your soul and you'll be happy.

This is the biggest problem in our society. We always look for a king's life but on public expense. If such a big house and pool of vehicles is desire of 17 scale officer then one could well imagine about the top ranks in all types of bureaucracy.

We forget that all the big houses were alloted by Britains to keep hold on any area or people by showing immense power of their army and administration i.e civil service. After 70 years we are still impressed by the things against which an independent nation must have protested strongly.
In UK even a British PM can't think of living in such a big house. But we are still unable to control the Civil service and talk about the PM house and Governor houses for political scoring.

Moreover, Mr. Bilal is serving in such area where one needs ample resources for his mobility. It is not the case that every AC gets 4 vehicles at any station. I wonder person like Bilal has been influenced by the materialism to such greater extent.

In short, I would say that we are still having the mentality of slaves because there is no justice and parity. Therefore everyone wants to be powerful either through government service or by affiliating himself to any political , religious group or any criminal gang.

Related to the topic, I would like to disagree with the people who say that civil servants should be selfless and should not complain about what they are getting in return. I would like to ask that aren't the military supposed to be selfless? Yes, many of them are but they all get well compensated for their services. Furthermore, aren't the politician, the leaders of our country, supposed to be selfless? Let's suppose that some one is, but again, we know they also get HANDSOMELY compensated. If we follow your narrative, our PM should live like the late Mr. Edhi. We all know that is not the reality.

I also disagree with those who think that the private sector does not serve the society. If that was not the case, why this country is so hungry for FDIs and exports? A respectable person above mentioned macroeconomic theory to show that how businesses are driven by profit. He failed to acknowledge the importance that these theories give to free markets.

A society does not prosper with the efforts of only one professional group; it is a collective effort from citizens of every profession. And until we do not associate each profession with a proper compensation in which a person his family can live a dignified life, we won't be able to create an equitable society. Thank you.

Let me disagree with you here. Assessing CSS through the lens of cost-benefit analysis, I'll assert that the benefit is quite higher than the cost, even if you fail the exam. Once you prepare for CSS and sit through the exam, you come out a different person. One, the amount of knowledge gained is priceless; two, the clarity of ideas and thought process after the attempt - unmatched; and three, the possibility of giving back to the country is a different feeling all together. In my humble opinion, even a failed CSS attempt is a major learning process that can eventually facilitate future endeavours.

This another form of flawed mentality. So if others are not selfless then you shouldn't be selfless as well. Does that justify it? If people are corrupt then you will be corrupt as well? It is because of such mentality that our country is in this situation.
