Analysis of reformed grouping and subjects

Dear all,

I know, many of you will be taken by surprise with the announcement of changes in subject grouping and syllabus for CE-2016 onwards. But behind every achievement, there is planning and a will to do it. Let's analyse the new subjects (including reformed syllabi of old subjects) and discuss which combinations would be the best. Seniors and experts are highly requested to give their opinions and help us.

Thank you

Xcalibre Saturday, April 18, 2015 12:27 AM

Although many gets affected by this sudden change and especially repeaters as they already covered the subjects. In my opinion FPSC has done some good changes as well like cut off unnecessary topics and I believe from now onwards papers 'll be more technical and stable and recruitment procedure 'll fast .

raviz Saturday, April 18, 2015 10:25 AM

I had previously opted the following subjects :
1- Zoology.
2- Agriculture.
3- Journalism.
4- Indopak history.

History and zoology had 2 papers each and were of 200 marks each.
Now, both the subjects carry 100 marks each but with the syllabi of 2 papers i.e the two papers for each are merged into 1 and now each part have 50 marks.

Agriculture and forestry were two different subjects of 100 marks each and these are also merged into 1 with each section of paper carrying 50 marks.

Now, its hell arduous, but, what can I do. I have to evolve nd I'll surely need more time now.
So I have chosen the following combination:

Public Administration.
Political Science.
Zoology.
Criminology.
Psychology.

Zoology and psychology have similarities being science subjects but are still disparate. But a person having good knowledge of any of these can prepare the other one as well and with ease. Zoology is also helpful in preparing G.k's biological sciences.

Political Science carries 200 marks and its a subject that can help in Essay writing, Pakistan affairs and Current affairs.
This subject enhances knowledge.

Now for Criminology, I would say that I opted for this subject because I was left with no other option.
History subjects have become more lethal and science group is now more toxic and requires extra brain drain.
Criminology is theoretical and an interesting subject and it has role to play in our society. This subject also enhances knowledge so its a helpful subject.

You may differ in your opinions as this is my personal analysis and my choice.
Best of luck guys.

I.R will be totally new subject for us...whereas Political Science is interesting and also we have its basic Knowledge through Pakistan Affairs.
Level of toughness is same in both of these..scoring trend cant be predicted at this juncture...
so take a look of syllabus and evaluate according to your interest and Aptitude.
I am also agri graduate...and Possibly I will go for Political Science.

nationbuilder Saturday, April 18, 2015 10:50 AM

where do i go:-(
its my 1st attempt and i have starting the prep of geography and psychology now according to re-shuffling they are both in the same group and also reduced to 100 and only 1 can b opted:sad:
according to new grouping, one must have to opt 1 subject of 200 marks to complete his/her 600 marks of optional...
i am civil engineer i am totally uncomfortable with the 1st and 2nd group, even i cant think about these subjects:cry
though i m civil engineer i can do physics but majority of aspirants says that physics is not scoring and safe subject..
please please guide me what can i do..

MorningLark Saturday, April 18, 2015 10:52 AM

My new opt subjects

Aabia Saturday, April 18, 2015 10:55 AM

listen dear!
can you guide me a little about zoology?i have gone through its syllabus and it seems like doable but which level books are to be read for zoology?

Aabia Saturday, April 18, 2015 10:57 AM

listen! if you have prepared zoology or have any guidance regarding that! can you guide me about it.i have gone through the syllabus,it seems doable, topics even read from fsc bio book. but for css which level books are to be read.

Palwasha tariq Saturday, April 18, 2015 10:58 AM

my new optionals :(
punjabi 100
criminology 100
zoology 100
history of pakistan and india 100
but confused to opt 200 marks subject i am thinking about IR / POLITICAL SCIENCE

Syed Ali Hadi Saturday, April 18, 2015 11:03 AM

I agree

Yes! I agree with you. Considering the fact that syllabi of the subjects have been increased; zoology syllabus is doable as it has limited syllabus as compated to others where recommended books have also been doubled.

The syllabus of zoology and recommended books are given in the new reforms.

Syed Ali Hadi Saturday, April 18, 2015 11:08 AM

Punjabi which was considered safe uptill now has also been expanded to such a level where it will be difficult to cover the syllabus well in time

asma manoo Saturday, April 18, 2015 11:44 AM

seniors plz also guide me.. my expected opted subjects are:
journalism & mass comm. 100
international law 100

FPSC has played havoc with the lives of former aspirants.I appeared in Css2015 all of the papers went well except for punjabi paper. My optional were
Indo Pak history (prepared 70 %)
Socilogy (prepared 100 %)
Geography (prepared 100 %)
Punjabi (prepared 40%)
and now i cant opt sociology and geography together because of the absurd condition imposed by the FPsc i.e aspirants are only allowed to select one subject from each group having 100 marks
i cant opt history of usa and indo pak history
css was and is my dream i did my best to purse my dream i did all the hard work required to translate that dream to reality.I am Engineer by profession i even scapegoated my professional career for the cause of css. Initially, when i started preparing for css i made a plan that i would burn the mid night oil for one year and after giving my first attempt i will look for job and then i will keep on revising along with the job.
And ironically now i have to begin from the scratch Thanks to fpsc.
FPSC does not have an idea about the intensity of the blow they have caused to former aspirants.

Now i am thinking to go for
Computer Science 200
Geology 100
IndoPak history oR History of Usa 100
Muslim law and Jurisprudence 100
Sociology 100

musmanhussain Saturday, April 18, 2015 01:53 PM

My optional subjects
Business administration
mercantile law
punjabi
Economics/IR choose one from them
Islamic history/british history/Gender studies/Agriculture
These are some confusing points.
Need suggestions from economists and diplomats in case of economics and IR???

asma manoo Saturday, April 18, 2015 01:54 PM

any one can guide about " Gender study" plzzz??

Huda Jadoon Saturday, April 18, 2015 02:16 PM

International Relations 200
Town Planning & Urban Management 100
Islamic History & Culture 100
Criminology 100
Psychology/Gender Studies 100 (i'm confused about these two)

Isn't IR better than Political Science? I think PS has a huge syllabus and too many theories etc.

As far as Criminology is concerned, I also like this subject but I'm a bit hesitant about the lack of material available which is relevant to Pakistani context.

I'm also like you but I don't feel like choosing Physics as it is dangerous even though it could be quite interesting. That is why I am inclined towards IR for my 200 marks subject. Political Science is also nice but I heard the syllabus is very lengthy and time consuming whereas IR is interesting and relatable to PS. I might be wrong, please correct me if I am.

I think your combination is very time consuming and needs a lot of hard work. You might want to re-think it. PS, IHC are very huge subjects, don't know about Philosophy, but hey, if you have a knack for it, then interest is the first priority and then comes scoring/length of course etc.

Read both syllabi of IR and Political Science again and again with some research on the stuff in them. You will come to a conclusion. I find both interesting but feel like IR is more interesting than PS.

There is no dearth of material on Criminology as FPSC has also recommend myriad of sites for that in the syllabus.
Ans as far as IR and PS are concerned, IR contains many institutions, foreign policies and outstanding issues that ll require facts and figures and dates. Its more tough. Accounting if you have background in it. I also like Criminology and Town Planning & Urban Management, do you think these are short subjects with interesting material in them? Finding books relevant to the syllabus would be a problem (for local topics mainly).

I'm in the exact same boat as you bro (apart from some difference in subject combination). I thought I'll revise my work for the next exam but seems like we have to start from scratch again. I am thinking of not starting a job even this year just because of CSS, I even left my job abroad and came back to appear for these exams because I was getting overage and preparing with job abroad is hell difficult. Seems like a good plan for us is to prepare for the upcoming exam in 2016 and start looking for jobs in Oct/Nov, that way, we should be able to start work in March right after exams. One thing that worries me quite a lot is that there is not much material in the market for these new subjects, I hope Jehangir's publishers or some other authors quickly get some books out in the market before it is too late as we need a lot of guidance to cover the courses. I think you should have another look at your subject combination, for some reason I don't feel easy with them (but then it is a personal observation, you can disagree).

Regarding Geology, don't you think opting Geology with Geography is good? At first I was scared of Geology but it seems quite similar to Geography and interesting as well.

aamirsaleem786 Saturday, April 18, 2015 02:49 PM

Go for your interest. But I would say that Psychology is an established subject with adequate guidance and material available. Don't know about Gender Studies, but if you have an interest, then go for GS. Also, check which subject can be covered faster as we don't have much time.

I've also come to the same conclusion like that you have propounded. Although I had Intl Law among my optional in 2015 attempt, I'm seriously considering now Muslim Law can be a better choice than that of International Law. Some new material has been added now in syllabus of Intl Law. But, syllabus of Muslim Law has been made somewhat easier and deducted from the previous syllabus.
At the same time, this can help a lot in understanding basic concept of Islamic Studies.

anabiya mughal Saturday, April 18, 2015 04:17 PM

Hello.. My previous optionals were Indopak history, psychology and zoology
Now to the new pattern these gather 300 marks:cry
Please suggest me optionals as i have medical background ,i am thinking to take muslim law ?? Is it a better option?? And also suggest me subjects of 200 marks,
Whose syllabus would be covered easily within short time:sad:
And how is this combination
Zoology
Psychology
Indopak history
Muslim law ??

hafiz mubashar Saturday, April 18, 2015 04:39 PM

@ anabiya mughal
I would suggest to opt Muslim Law, at least when you are considering to opt one subject from Group No. 6.
According to your background, Psychology, Zoology are related to. And, from 200 marks subject, you can just consider I.R or Pol Science.

Well it is an individual choice, but for me the first section in Paper 1 of Political Science that deals with thoughts and theories is a no and it seems quite lengthy with lots of memorisation, so 50/200 marks are gone, then if you look in the end, it mentions history of IR so IR is in this syllabus even. Moreover, I think IR helps us a lot in Essay, CA, PA and other subjects as well. Moreover, IR has been upgraded to a 200 marks subject with a slightly changed syllabus.

But nowadays I'm thinking of opting Physics with or without IR.. Still in the process of deciding...!

kingfalcon Sunday, April 19, 2015 08:57 PM

What do you guys think about the new subjects like:

Governance & Public Policies
Town Planning & Urban Management
Environmental Sciences
Criminology

I think Governance and Public Administration are quite overlapping?

Town Planning seems interesting and short. There is relevant material available for it too.

Criminology seems interesting as well but we have to rely a lot on foreign authors and some websites, I hope those websites have enough information for the Pakistani context.

Environmental Sciences seems nice too, a mixture of EDS, Geography and some extra material, don't you think??

Btw Anthropology and Sociology seems overlapping too?
