I personally think it is pointless to go through a grammar book cover-to-cover. There's a ton of irrelevant material there, and you will probably forget the nitty gritty of the grammar rules once you finish the book.

Instead write a few articles and take them to a reliable English teacher. He/she will point out to you the short comings in your writing. We all make mistakes that we are unaware of. The tutor will highlight these issues and you can work on them. This will save you time and effort.

One thing you should always do is to read. Several CSS qualifiers have written on this forum that they qualified the CSS without so much as touching a grammar book. The reason being they had an ear for the right grammar which only develops with regular reading. This is also something which will help you improve your prose for the essay.
