Abdullah Memon

39th Common, (PSP)

Jahangir's World Times
Vol/6.....Issue/III.....Dec/11

Please tell us about yourself, educational background and achievements in detail.

Well, I belong to district Thatta of rural Sindh and I got my education till intermediate level from my home town, Sujawal. Then later on I got my engineering degree in 'Electronics' from MUET (Mehran University of Engineering & Technology) Jamshoro. So, after passing out from MUET, I gave my free time to the preparation of CSS-exam of 2010 and this is my achievement that I got 1st position in Sindh province and 59th in all Pakistan.

Being first position holder in Sindh, what type of strategy did you follow for preparation?

In my first two attempts, I used to give maximum time to books instead of writing practice so; I had plenty of knowledge but could not get maximum marks in papers. Contrary to this in my 3rd and last attempt, I concentrated a lot on writing practice. In fact, this continuous writing practice not only enabled me to express my thoughts in a clear way but also improved my English. Hence, writing on different topics taught me how to impress the examiner.

What type of guidance should one seek to achieve such a raving success?

Frankly speaking, CSS-exam is a very difficult exam so; one cannot pass this exam unless you have proper guidance. Therefore one should remain in touch with seniors to share their experiences and previous papers should be followed to know that what are the pattern of questions of different subjects are in practice. Apart from that continuous writing practice and getting it checked by the seniors or subject specialists are crucial for success in CSS-exam.

Did you prepare yourself from any academy if not then how did you manage to get this privileged position?

Well, there is no doubt academies do play very important role but in my opinion this role depends upon teachers, who are teaching over there. In short, academies save the time of candidates. As far as I am concerned, I did not join any academy.

What did you prefer books or notes; what should be prepared and how?

I prefer books than notes because the former give a detailed account of a topic, but this does not mean that notes do not explain the topics. In fact, if notes are prepared by experienced one then these should be followed in order to save the time. But I think candidates should go through the books to extract mature thoughts because candidates must remember that CSS-exam is the game of writing. One who reaches this level then it is certain that he would qualify the exam.

What are the steps for the preparation of CSS Exams especially English Essay and Composition paper?

English essay and composition are two crucial papers of CSS because majority of the candidates flung in these two papers. Here, I want to share some points by which I prepared my essay and composition papers, these are as follows:

Requirements of essay
1. Good in English grammar
2. Usage of simple English words
3. Correct usage of punctuation marks
4. Mature thoughts
5. Extraction of material for essay from multiple resources
6. Daily practice of writing at least three hours should be reserved for essay writing and get it checked by a subject specialist.

Requirements of composition paper
1. Good at grammar
2. Grip on English words, idioms and phrases.
3. Daily practice of précis writing
4. Mature and attractive sentences of pair of words and idioms
5. Do solve the previous papers

What sort of combination should students opt for the optional subjects?

Optional subjects also play a crucial role in CSS in fact; these are the subjects which help us to get good score in the exam. So, candidates should opt those optional subjects in which they personally feel themselves comfortable.

What are the ways to get higher marks in written and interview and write down your written and interview scores in detail?

If you write the correct answer with legible writing then definitely you would get good marks. But correct answer should follow the requirements of a question too. But on the contrary what happens most of the candidates attempt the answer with irrelevant introductory lines and later they come to the requirements of the question. Actually, this irrelevancy looses the interest of the reader or examiner. The best way is to concentrate on the question .However; interview is some thing different from the written portion of CSS-exam. In an interview you just have to give the opinion- based answers to the panel. If you do not know the answer just say sorry rather than beating about the bush. Panel just observes your way of communication and body gestures. They intentionally ask you some typical question to ascertain the traits of your personality.

What are the general problems of CSS candidates in Sindh Rural as well as Urban?

The candidates of Sindh rural face two problems, i.e. poor education and lack of social awareness in fact; most of the students of sindh rural do not know what the CSS is. Whereas most candidates of Sindh urban prefer to invest their time to obtain other professional degrees in order to get a job in a multinational firm or corporate scholar.

Do you believe in 'Luck Factor' in CSS-exam?

I am still unable to understand the difference between luck and destiny. But I remember this line “The dream is not what you see in your sleep but the dream is what which does not allow you to sleep.”

What is so special in Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) that you opted for this group?

Police uniform has remained attractive to me. Besides, this service keeps a person fit and active round the clock and enables a person to facilitate the common and poor people to live without the fear of influential persons.

Any Message
I would like to suggest all the aspirants that first get their professional degree then go for CSS exam. This professional degree will help them to secure their future in case of failure in CSS.

A csp or anyone can't guide in such a detail, particularly in such kind of interview, but following are some of the tips for ''what to write and how to manage writing for all subjects, although I am not an expert or csp yet, but as per my experience, these tips can be helpful for the aspirants:

1. Mostly practice is required for Essay paper, and apart from requirement it can be the best tool for improving English and to develop flow in writing.

2. For all subjects it is not humanly possible to practice each and every question, but make bullet point notes for revising easily along with writing practice.

3. Get your writings checked from some expert English teacher(specifically for essay)

4. Writing current affair questions is also very helpful, read newspapers and write your own analysis on a topic, it will enhance your analytical+language skills.
