Both have same rank (BS-17), perhaps the badges are different, and can be posted on same assignments. ASP is inducted through CSS (PSP group) whereas DSP is so far ranker. ASP normally enjoys more privileges and prestige, and have proper service structure for promotion. Rumours are in the air that government is planning to induct DSsP through PPSC, which i fear, PSP group will never let it happen.

Aoa.
It's almost amusing to find a lots of misinformation on this page. Let me try to set the record straight in the little time I have.
Basically ASP and DSP have same roles to play. The distinction in nomenclature is there to reflect the two different methods of their induction.

ASP's are recruited directly through FPSC ( css exam ) where as DSP's come from the provincial cadre. Some get promoted from constable to DSP and others from such ranks as ASI, SI and inspectors. There is however a precedent of direct recruitment of DSP's in Sindh and Baluchistan which has been discouraged now a days due to lack of transparency.

Both ASP's and DSP's are supervisory officers of their respective subdivision hence same responsibilities and duties. As ASP's come from PSP cadre they have more chances of growth and promotions. After the promulgation of PO 2002. Most get to grade 21 before they retire. Rankers mostly retire in BS-18(SP) however we have a lot of examples of tankers becoming DIG's.
Regards
