WELL AFSHAN FIRST DON’T UNDER ESTIMATE URSELF…………………U KNOW I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE COMING UP FROM GOVT SCHOOLS OR VERY ORDINARY LOW STANDARD SCHOOLS WITH FLUENCY AND VERY NICE ACCENT COZ OF CONTINUOUS PRACTICE…………………………ONE OF MY PROFESSORS IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT HAD VERY NICE ACCENT AND ONCE I ASKED HIM HOW HE HAD DEVELOPED THE SKILL AND THE REPLY WAS,”DON’T THINK THAT I AM THE SON OF A LORD WHO HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP AMONG ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLE.I HAVE BEEN A STUDENTS OF “TAAT” SCHOOL AND HAVE MADE MYSELF DISTINGUISHED BY PRACTING & DISPOSING OFF SHYNESS.”

As far as i think,practise both writing and speaking does help,but if you ignore the people around you and dont care about what they say and speak the "Tootee Pooothee" English,i am sure you'll be a master one day!!!

I write this in reply to Mr. Mohiuddin's post, specifically. Dear Brother, I deeply understand that you are shooting those pitiless invectives at me. I am really sorry if you felt bad. But let me explain my point!

How do you really define a beginner? The one who is learning ABC. I am sure "No". A beginner can be the one who doesn't have a basic understanding of the language (By this I mean, he/she can't read and write things in the context, meant!).

But, please cast a glance at Miss Afshan's post. I guess she explained us her problem very well and understood our recommendations in their true meanings. So I won't call her a "beginner" at least. And even if I do, I think she has the basic understanding. So this is the reason I called that book a practical choice for Madam.

In case, i'm still wrong. Please pardon me!

In order to speak and write the English language correctly, it is imperative that the fundamental principles of the Grammar be mastered, for no matter how much we may read of the best authors, no matter how much we may associate with and imitate the best speakers, if we do not know the underlying principles of the correct formation of sentences and the relation of words to one another, we will be to a great extent like the parrot, that merely repeats what it hears without understanding the import of what is said. Of course the parrot, being a creature without reason, cannot comprehend; it can simply repeat what is said to it, and as it utters phrases and sentences of profanity with as much facility as those of virtue, so by like analogy, when we do not understand the grammar of the language, we may be making egregious blunders while thinking we are speaking with the utmost accuracy.

My pesonal suggestion would be watch a lot of CNN & MSNBC and such, if you have access to them. Because listening can help speaking skills, and writing as well.
