A general consensus on certain principles which are necessary to create harmony and peace in society, are called rules. Rules are beneficial for human existence. Traditions, beliefs and laws are such rules which govern human life. They prohibit devious social behaviour and encourage to adopting such manners and actions as are ranked good for social progress. But one thing ought to be borne in mind that there is no golden at all. Rules are formulated for the goodness of men. And men are vulnerable to social change and society. Men change as the life changes. So changing rules according to men’s needs is a healthy practice in developed societies. Rules are not static. They need proper amendments for conformity with the changes. Changes are always disallowed in traditional and authoritarian societies. People struck to their rigid rules which were, once, made many generations ago. Their reluctance to changing rules is retrogressive. For instance, women education had not been considered necessary in some of the traditional families. If any family insists on to follow this rule of their ancestors by ignoring women education, it will prove harmful for many generations. Without education, women can not be expected to be good members of the society. Their contribution in national progress will be at minimum level. The golden rule of one age has become a barbaric rule for the other age. While in progressive societies, laws are dynamic. They are changed according to needs. Rules are not rigid rather they are flexible in nature. This practice brings harmony in society and takes it towards exploring new avenues of development. Rules are made for men, not men for rules. So they have to be altered and replaced by others, if they oppose to modern trends. It justifies that the golden rule is that there is no golden rule. If any rule is present then it is the ‘rule of change’, that should be accepted by all the societies for human existence!
