Thumbs up Pargraph/Expansion of an idea

Dear Friends,

I am sharing some paragraphs (expansion of Ideas) taken from “English for Students”. Although these paragraphs are short in length but these paragraphs will provide you a base to expand these ideas in more comprehensive way. You may use two or three paragraphs for expanding an idea or a proverb.

Best regards,

Muzzamil Hussain

Thumbs up A Bad Workman Quarrels With His Tools

People can generally be classified into two groups those who have talents and those who have not. A really talented person succeeds in his work. He makes use of his abilities properly and achieves good results. He is confident of doing his work. He uses his tools in the right way, even if they are not excellent. At the same time, if a badly talented person even if given excellent tools, fails to achieve good results. His skills are limited. He tries to find lame excuses for his failure to achieve good results. He blames his tools for the bad work he has done. He does not want to admit that he is a bad workman. He deliberately forgets the fact that his talents and skills are limited. Even if good opportunities are provided for the less talented person, he fails to exploit such chances and succeed in life. But if the talented person is given the right opportunity, he makes use of it to the full, thereby achieving his goal in life. While the former blames the opportunities and people around him for his failure, the latter without complaint utilizes them and succeeds in life.

Thumbs up A Bird In The Hand Is Worth Two In The Bush.

A bird which one has got in the hand is always more valuable that two or three birds which await one in the bush. That is so because; the birds in the bush can always fly away and leave the person with nothing while the one in his hand cannot escape. So if the person lets the bird in his hand go free and tries to catch those in the bush, they may also fly away leaving him a complete loser. It is always wise to utilize whatever opportunity is at hand than look forward to some other opportunity that may come in future with more advantages. It is better to be satisfied with whatever change is there and make the most out of it than wait for a better one which may never come. This applies to people also. Those who are near to us and willing to help are more valuable friends that those who are away. Those who are away might not be willing to help at all. So it is foolish to reject whatever help is at hand. The wise man always relies on the present instead of laying his hopes on future gains.

Thumbs up A Contented Mind Is A Perpetual Feast

We engage ourselves often in the pursuit of pleasures. There is no limit to the pleasures one can have. The more money we have, the more we wish to have. The more happiness we have, the more we want them. But such material pleasures can give us no real and ultimate satisfaction. They can give us only temporary happiness. The very next moment, the happiness lessens and we are again on the lookout for more. But this is not the real purpose of life. For life to become meaningful, we should have real and ultimate contentment. Real satisfaction means the contentment of mind. If the mind is satisfied with what it has, it is happy. Such happiness will be long lasting. It will be ultimate in the sense that it will not wish for anything more. So if one wants to have peace of mind, he should be contented with what he has. Only a contented mind can give continuous and real happiness. Worldly pleasures and comforts only make up a part of the real satisfaction in life. They are not lasting. It is in fact a contented mind that would give us real satisfaction like a perpetual feast.

Thumbs up A Fault Confessed Is Half Redressed

We are all human beings. It is quite natural for us to commit mistakes. All of us must have committed some fault or other in our life. There is nobody who has not committed any mistake. But once we know that we have done something wrong, we should be ready to admit it. Admitting or confessing a fault means that we are prepared to correct it. If we don’t care to admit a fault, it only means that we are not prepared or willing to correct it. Willingness to self-correction is made easier by admitting a fault. If we admit a fault, we have come a long way in correcting it. Without admitting a fault, it is impossible to correct it. So, the first step in correcting ourselves is to confess it. Only broad-minded persons are able to confess their mistakes. People respect and appreciate those who admit their follies.

Thumbs up Action Speaks Louder Than Words

In today’s world, practical aspects of life weigh more than the theoretical. Life is full of hazards and to overcome the obstacles of life, a person must strive to be practical and stop wasting precious time on unnecessary preaching. In other words, he must be man of action in order to succeed in life. Many great personalities of history have put into practice what their conscience told them to do and have acted according to their beliefs. They have not contemplated too much on how to reach their set goals. Precious time much be converted into moments of action for real success in life. Idle talk can lead one nowhere. On the contrary, life should be molded on the firm basis of action. It must be secondary to the practical aspects of life. In our dynamic world, success and happiness depend on action, not on theory or empty words.

Thumbs up Beggars Must Not Be Choosers

Beggars earn their livelihood by begging. By begging, they have to accept whatever is given to them. They cannot hope to choose from the alms given to them. Alms differ from meager things to those that count. But whatever is given, the beggar accepts them uncomplainingly. Likewise if we are living on the kindness of others or hold a job that was secured with much difficulty, we have to bear with patience all difficulties that come with it. Otherwise we may find ourselves with no job. But if we have enough money to love on, we can consider the worth of the job. If the salary is less, we can demand more. The morel we should understand our own position before taking daring or risky steps. Hasty and haughty action will bring calamities and sorrows. Even if we are not in a helpless position, it is always good to think twice before we act.

Thumbs up Better The Devil You Know Than The Devil You Do not

The devil is a wicked spirit that harms people. It is always dangerous to face him. But once we get familiar with the devil, we can avoid his evil work to a certain extent as we know what to expect from it. In other words, we get familiar with the devil’s behaviour. We can take necessary precautions and reduce the dangers to a great extent. But if we are meetings the devil for the first time, we may not know what sort of dangers and harm will come our way. This is true in the case of difficulties also. If we have experienced a problem before, we can always do something to reduce its intensity. In the case of an unknown or unfamiliar danger or problem, we will be more or less helpless. There are people who are difficult and dangerous. But once we know their ways and what to expect from them we can always take steps to avoid them and adjust ourselves accordingly. So it is always advisable to rely on someone whom we had known before despite his faults than to depend on unfamiliar person. A known evil is a lesser evil.

Thumbs up Birds Of A Feather Flock Together

Birds of the same kind are often seen to flock and fly together. Those of the same kind only flock together. A swallow would not be seen to join a goose and vice versa. Some special kinds of birds which cross the seas in search of warm regions go in flocks. This is because a bird can be comfortable only in flock of its kind. This is the case in human beings also. Those with similar tastes and interests often form groups and associate with one another. They might not be feeling comfortable in a different sort of company. In order to form a lasting friendship, people must have tastes and outlooks which they share in common. A person’s character can be assessed by the company he keeps. If he moves in a circle of drunkards, he will most probably be a rogue. If he moves among a circle of refined men, his civility is also likely to be enhanced. Likewise bad company can spoil his character to the utmost if he moves among them.

Thumbs up Blood Is Thicker Than Water

Blood relationship is always found to be stronger and more valuable than mere friendship formed through acquaintance. Blood ties are lasting. They have a firmer bond of affection than all other relationships. Friends may be sincere and willing to help. But they have got their limits. They often stop when they find themselves to be in troubled waters. But blood relatives such as father, mother, brother or sister will stand by our side risking even their necks. They in fact are our true allies. There might be exceptions to this rule. But true and sincere friends are often hard to get. Even if they are true and sincere, we cannot expect the greatest sacrifice from them. They give more importance to their own kith and kin. So even if true and sincere friendship is to be given due credit, we should value blood ties more. The most unselfish service is often got from our kith and kin than from friendship formed through acquaintance. They last longer and are often found to be stronger than the latter.
