"High School English Grammar" by Wren and Martin is also a good book to start with.

according to my opinion if you are very new to it than start it with:

there are small book of tenses made easy, verbs make easy, pronoun made easy,..etc avaliable in the market..
Make a start with them ..they will help you alot to have a grip on the subject.
After this go for the books of foreign writers mentioned by above respected members.

thank u for this precious information about english grammar. i attempt the css exam in last year, i clear all subjects except english essay and grammar. so in this forum i get lots of information.
