Oh! it means step brother. Please tell me the rule according to which you have corrected the sentence "Is this his half-brother?" Why can't we use this, as it is an indefinite pronoun referring to something/someone "near" or when we point out them.

lets take a example/ situation.
When you introduce your friend to your parents, what would you say?

Father meet my friend, This is a software engineer? OR
Father meet my friend, He is a software engineer??

another example:
This teacher of yours - how old is he?
Or
This teacher of yours- how old is this??
so HE/She basically defines/describes the gender as well as used usually for person.

Correction:

5.They went direct to their college
