6) Conclusion

The term ’Gender Equality’ has gained an immense attention from all over the world. Proponents of gender equality emphasize on equal opportunities and rights for women as enjoyed by men. They claim that women are in no way less competent than men, and they deserve their due rights and liabilities which have been confiscated by the male dominated status quo. They demand an end to any kind of discrimination against the weaker sex. But to what extent women have become successful in achieving their cause is a question the answer to which depends upon the material and educational uplift of the society. The western developed countries which are enjoying high literacy rate, economic stability, democratic government, religious freedom, societal equality, and rule of law have provided women with an opportunity to consolidate their position in the society. On the other hand, the concept of gender equality is far more than a dream in underdeveloped countries owing to the turmoil in their socio economic fabric of the society. Pakistan, being an underdeveloped one, is a no exception. The condition of women in Pakistan is not satisfactory. Honor-killings, exploitation at working places, denial of rights of inheritance, limited economic opportunities, and character assassination in politics presents a gloomy picture. All these evils being committed against women drive their strength from stereotypic cultural and social values, wrong interpretation of Islamic teachings, illiteracy, economic disparities, and negligence on part of government officials. So the gender equality is really a myth in Pakistan but the present situation could be reversed by promoting education, women empowerment, and by strengthening and promoting women protection laws.
