Under NO circumstances should headings be used in essays.

I wud also say NO.
headings are sometimes followed in some special cases but most of the times u dun need to follow headings.so it had better be at safer side.

instead of putting headings you should draw outline of the essay. outline will show the structure of your essay. headings have no place in essay. avoid giving headings in essay.

Exceptions are allowed but in rare cases, specially in an essay where statistical or scientific facts are to be illustrated. However; It is better to avoid headings in essay.

its not mut but rather essential Because it give proper arrangement to an Essay.As well as if the outlines arrangement is fine and cover the whole story so it will must reflect the concentration of checker.

It is not imperative to give a outline but it help your in organizing your essay.Outline just help you to bring a smoothness in your essay as it is said the essay must be in a pleasant tone.
