The formula- must read!
Hey ladies and men! I have some tips to share with all of you since English is my expertise! I noticed that here in Pakistan school/college kids are not so emphasized on "critical thinking" which is the key factor when it comes to Essay writing and the expression of essay "IN THEIR OWN WORDS" is also not that emphasized which is again the most important. I am an aspirant of CSS exam and will IA give it coming year! I have completed my middle school/ high school and Bachelors from USA and here are some tips that I got from my former lecturers and professors hoping it will be a bit helpful!
FORMULA: 1. Most essay are variations and adaptations of the formula. Using the formula will not make your prose immortal, but it could help turn a muddle of words into a model of clear thinking. The formula is simple an all-purpose plan for putting ideas into a "clear", easy-to-flow order. It uses a beginning, a middle, and an end. It's not sensational, but it works virtually any essay. Its greatest virtue is simplicity. The formula prescribes a three-stage structure for an essay. its also requires a body consisting of three points. WHY THREE? mainly because three is a number that works. One is too simple, two is better but is still shallow. Three, however is thoughtful. It suggest depth. 2. Develop your ideas fully with "Examples" and "details" because precise, well-documented information is far more convincing than general and unsubstantiated opinion. 3. USE PLAIN WORDS: That's a principle easy to say but hard to live by when you're hoping to impress the readers with your intellect and sophistication. Yet nothing, truly nothing, conveys your erudition better than plain words. You'll get no extra credit for an essay crammed with ornate, multi syllabic words that sound profound to you may seem pompous to your readers. Or worse, they could make you appear foolish. for example, a student that wrote, "I am of the opinion that a prerequisite of parenthood includes disbursement of penal adjudication among siblings with an even, dispassionate hand," needs a basic lesson in plain writing such as, " I think that good parents should know how to be fair in disciplining their children" or " I think that being equally strict with all their children is a prerequisite of being good parents"!! 4. (I think this is 'The' most IMP) Good writers often experience the world more intensely than other people such as like artists, they think visually. They listen hard to the sounds and voices around them and are extra-sensitive to smells, to tastes, and to feel of things. They keep their senses at full throttle in order, as the writer understand that good writing must sometimes appeal to reader's senses. Therefore "show" more then you "tell"!!! Example: Instead of describing your uncle as "absent-minded" show him knocking his head on a closed door as he awakes!! Rather then saying room is a "mess", show the pile of wrinkled clothes in the corner and the books and snickers wrappers scattered on the floor. The same principle applies to smell, "the whole garden was surrounded with smell of roses"; to sound: " the hum and throb of big machines in the distance"; to touch: " the feel of cool, linen bed sheets"; and to taste: "a cold, sweet of clear lemonade on hot day". In short by writing vividly, you prevent readers from misinterpreting what you have to say! 5. Use lively VERBS!! Active verbs stimulate interest by waking up the language. They create movement, perform, stir things up and move around. I hope you guys enjoyed reading and got some info!!! good luck!! Saba~ |
