Default Approaching The Essay

Does CSS Essay in particular require an academic approach to Essay writing among other forms of approaches and discourses that are mentioned? That would involve critical assessment and evaluation based on inferences from popular published works and authors, appropriate citations, statistics etc. Or does it only require making use of the 4 discourses namely argumentation, narration, exposition and description?

Another situation that needs to be addressed precisely is the approach for introductory paragraphs. Typically academic essays start with answering the questions/titles of the essay. In CSS, however, the topics are not always provided in the form of questions; These would include open ended (directionless) titles, quotations, etc. Given this, one can not simply address the ''question''.

The question, I repeat, is how does one approach the introduction in an effective manner (the genre notwithstanding) that can be applied to CSS essays in general? Advise from successful as well as experienced candidates will be appreciated.

I think we must follow the later style that you mentioned that is more argumentative and expressive. During my CSS preparation at Quaid-e-Azam library Lahore, 3 yrs back, I came to interact with a nice fellow who got 3rd or 4th position in CSS-2009. He said to me that he wrote just a single line about the statistics on terrorism that is Pakistan have suffered more than 37 billion dollars due to this war against terrorism. And he got 62 marks in essay. Facts and figures and statistics have significant worth in current affairs not in essay. Tough decorating your essay with given statistics is like an icing on the cake but it is not compulsory. The examiner has to check your expression rather that bulk of knowledge. That is my opinion any one can differ.

I also want to know the advise regarding introduction from my seniors.

Either title is a question or not still there is a position that you are going to take on the subject and that you will indicate in introduction. You should.

Since you suggest (and I'm relieved to learn) that we're not bound by following an academic approach (which makes it all the more dull) I assume we could maybe start the introduction with a striking and catchy question? We could do that right? If people could introduce their essays with quotations, they might as well use intriguing questions?

Our seniors guide us well in this regard. We all have different style of writings so as introduction. Some starts with a question from and some with general description of the topic. I myself starts with direct approach. There is a quotation of one of the moderator comes in my mind:

Two and two makes four so as three plus one.

So we can follow our natural style of writing. One can differ from my opinion.

Well some senior colleague guide us in this regard.
