Luck matters if examiner is willing to give repeated essay topics in exam, but as per change trend of essay setters they mold the topics in different perspective, so i guess luck only matters if at the time of paper attempting one can write on given topic with clear thoughts and arrange his thoughts in a systematic way. Its all depend on how you produce maximum thoughts in short time and that's need practice as well command on several topics in various perspective. As in my 2013 attempt I score 24 in essay on "meaning and purpose of education" hardly write 8 pages. Although this topic was expected topic, but lack of enough knowledge on this topic result in poor performance. So in essay not only luck matters but your performance matters a lot.

20 pages and 30 marks... i guess you lacked the material they needed or may be the reason could be that you attempted the most attempted essay of that year
By the way Were you expecting to pass?

Last year the most attempted essay was ''Gender equality is a myth''.
And it was also the essay in which most of the candidates were passed.

Thumbs up

Luck factor in Essay paper is only 5 percent. There are 2 cards you have and they are knowledge and confidence. And confidence comes with knowledge.

You need to have a political mindset. And should concentrate on your own analytical power. You should always be asking 'Wh' questions from your self about the issues. This is how you can build strong analytical power and diverse opinion. You need to carve out new dimensions and present an out of the box solution for them. Just read the following material:

1. Newspapers
2. Magazines
3. History Books
4. International Affairs
5. Economics
6. Political Science
7. Diplomatic Relations

I second this point of view.Luck does matter in choosing the topic, most of the time some words catch your apparent attention but actually you are unable to write coherently on that topic and it happened with me in Ce014.i went for the Great nations win without fighting when after work out of 45 minutes I realized that I lack coherence here and I switched over to another topic. And today when I remember that I really thank God that I switched to another topic and am hopeful, otherwise I would have been in complete despair and not waiting for the result

I think luck matter in whole process of css, from css aspirant to csp officer. There are many csp's in top 10 positions who secured only 40 marks in essay paper thats may consider as their luck.Never ignore luck factor in css or in whole life.
