Topic: Water Crisis in Pakistan and Remedies

Thesis Statement:
Water crisis in Pakistan has become adverse than never before. Be it climate change, limited storage capacity, trans-boundary dispute or mismanagement of water; government entities ostensibly lack coordination to tackle the issue of water crisis. Construction of reservoirs, using advanced telemetry, national water policy review are a few ways to counter this emergency situation.

2. Causes of Water Crisis in Pakistan
a. Water supplies are vulnerable and suffer from extensive losses
b. Limited storage capacity
c. Trans-boundary disputes intensifying river supply vulnerability
d. Outdated distribution system and inequitable distribution of water
e. Groundwater resource depleting rapidly due to over-pumping
f. Extremely low water tariffs are distorting incentives for water conservation
g. Low recovery and underfunded water infrastructure contributing to high water losses
h. Gaps in governance leading to inefficient management
i. Climate Change – a Major Emerging Challenge for Water Sustainability

3. Remedies
a. Construction of Reservoirs on emergency basis: Diamer-Basha, Kalabagh Dam
b. Revamping the system of water rights
c. Strengthening the role of IRSA
d. Disseminate awareness regarding the rising stress on water resources
e. Raising height of existing dams to increase capacity
f. using advanced technology e.g. drip framing for water conservation
g. Building national consensus on water sustainability via constitutional amendment
h. using wireless sensor network/ telemetry system as a central database to monitor water consumption/ flow yearly
