Peace perception and practices

Outline

1. Introduction:
o Peace is ever aspired goal
o Peace violations are as old as human history

2. Peace and efforts carried out for peace in past.
o Establishment of ‘Concert of Europe’.
o Formulation of ‘League of nations’.
o Conception of ‘United Nations’

3. Peace is handicapped by following factors:
a) Economy issues trigger violence.
o East Pakistan Crisis was largely due to economic disparity.
b) Territorial claims hinder peace.
o World war 1 and world war 2 broke out due to territorial thirst.
o Kashmir keeps subcontinent at brink of war.
c) Ethnicity harms peace.
o Rwanda Massacre was undoubtedly based on ethnicity.
o Peace less Karachi is suffering Ethnic violence.
-Muhajir Sindhi Pakhtun issues.

d) Belief and religious differences are detrimental to peace.
o Israel- Palestine conflict is matter of belief difference.
o Sectarianism inflicts havoc.
-Bloodshed in Syria.
-Sectarian killings in Pakistan.
-Sectarian violence in Christianity.

4. Perception of peace is often very diverse.
a) Islam envisages peace as tranquility for all.
o Non violence and non provocations as distinctive features of Islam.
o Holy Prophet(PBUH) as ‘Rehmat ul Aalemeen’
b) Often Self interests alter peace perception.
o Imperialism was once conceived as vital for peace.
o Harboring terrorist sanctuaries is carried out in name of peace.
-Mullah Fazalullah hiding in Afghanistan.

5. Human practices sometime aid and at times disrupt peace.
a) Laws and regulations are formulated to ensure peace.
b) Violence is often reaped in guise of peace.
o Indian brutalities in Kashmir.
1)Killing of over 100,000 innocent Kashmiris.
2)Cruel ‘AFSPA’ regulation.
3)Unnamed and collective graves.
o Israel provocations in region are always for ‘peace’.
1) New settlements uprooting inhabitants.
2) Blockading helpless Palestinians.

c) Middle east nations inflame sectarianism in name of peace.
o Syrian Shia sunni tussle.
o Bahrain anarchy.
o Pakistan as victim of regional game.
d) Peace is often drawn back by destabilizing countries.
o Libya in tatters.
o Iraq engulfed in violence.
e) Hegemony often slams peace.
o USSR intervention in Afghanistan and resultant chaos.
o US invading Afghanistan and Iraq.
f) Blasphemy an extreme irony for peace.
o ‘Satanic Verses’ by Salman Rusdie.
o Terry Jones.
o ‘ Life of Muhammad(PBUH)’.

6. Some fundamental steps can enhance and ensure peace.
a) Empower UN to overcome global conflicts.
b) Eradicate exploitation and hegemony.
c) Emancipate suppressed ones.
d) Ensure equality.
e) Honor sovereignty of nations.
f) Eliminate and discourage blasphemous speech, writing, actions etc.
