Default Suffering Soul in Scientific Age

Seniors please check my essay, and point out the mistakes and weaknesses. I will be thankful.

Suffering Soul in Scientific Age

We have made a remarkable progress in the field of science. From the dawn of industrial revolution in the eighteenth century to the preparation of the first space tour to mars in 2018, science has made dramatic changes in the human life. But what have we put at the stake in the way to this progress? We have been burning our soul at the stake for it. What is soul? It is the true essence of a human being that lives even when the mortal body ceases to exist. Body is nothing but a mass of decomposable flesh and bones. If the body is a rose soul is its sweet smell, if the body is a river soul is the flow in it. Thus it’s the soul that makes body lively. What use is the rose if it does not possess sweet smell? What good does a river when it is stagnant?
Today we have attached much more importance to the body and have been inventing new things to fulfill its need. On the other hand we have done nothing for the soul, which is more important than the body. Importance of the soul can be noted from the fact that Allah Almighty describes soul, in the holy Quran, as coming from his own spirit. Jesus Christ said that your soul is worth more than the rest of the world put together. Science has procured cure for all ailments of the body. It has only added to soul’s sufferings by ignoring its existence. Our soul feels caged in our bodies when we do not fulfill its needs and do not listen to its calls. Andrew Marvell tells entrapped soul’s feelings in ‘’ A dialogue between body and soul’’ where the soul describes the body as ‘’bolts of bone’’ and ‘’manacles’’ of hand, and cries that it is

Here blinded with an eye, and there
Deaf with the drumming of an ear
A soul hung up as ‘twere, in chains
of nerves and arteries and veins

We have been busy in the pursuit of acquiring material goods since their invention by the scientists. We want to buy luxurious cars and big houses, so we use most of our energies in earning money. Sometimes these desires open wrong paths in front of us and make us corrupt. Thus, science has made us more greedy than ever. A life that focuses wholly and solely upon material possessions is not that has much room for spirituality. Greedy person is like a rat that scampers for freshly dumped mound of garbage. When we spend most of our time and energy in such menial activities our soul suffers endlessly
One can argue that our forefathers were as greedy as we are today. However, one cannot deny that science has increased man’s capability to kill his fellow men many folds. Soul loves peace but peace has become a rare commodity in this age of science and technology. Scientists claim that they have, with the help of their knowledge, invented ways to control catastrophes of the past such as famines, epidemics etc which threatened existence of whole tribes and nations. At the same time they overlook the new means of destruction that they have invented for the human race. Science has given man such sophisticated and deadly weapons that he can destroy whole cities and countries in no time. Today, nations take pride in acquiring these weapons of mass destruction. Scientists boast of their success in making nuclear weapons in spite of the fact that these weapons can transform this living world into a burning hell. Our soul suffers when a man kills his fellow man.
In many countries people are suffering from malnutrition because they don’t have enough food to eat. This condition arises either due to war or limited land fertility in these countries. On the other hand the United States has announced to spend $130 billion to build a robot army for fighting future wars. This means humans are tired of killing each other, now robots will murder humans. Such huge amount of money could be spent on supplying food to the hungry, turning infertile land into fertile one and other services to human beings. But, unfortunately science has kept humans busy in the activities that have saddened their soul.
Watching and appreciating natural beauty around us such as greenery and flowers in garden, animals, colorful birds etc, is a sort of meditation that comforts our soul. Science has done equal harm to the things around humans as it has done to humans. Industrial wastes and certain toxic materials arising from scientific processes harm all forms of life around us. Emission of gases from the factories has warmed our climate over the last century, as a result of this glaciers are melting. Melting of glaciers is ruin of the natural beauty as well as it increases the incidence of heavy floods.
In older times humans consoled each other in difficult times, this gave solace to their souls. But today when humans strive for modern technologies true relationships have become scarce. Men of science claim that they have connected the whole world and strengthened human relationships. Nevertheless, relationships today are devoid of true emotions and enthusiasm; humans are joined together only by their material needs. Thus soul suffers deep pain when it finds no truthfulness in the words of humans.
Sufferings of the soul can be remedied only if we humans change our ways. Science is a principle that is at the very base of all natural phenomena, so it cannot be destroyed from its roots. If we use the same scientific knowledge for the well being of our fellowmen and the things around us it will not become the cause of soul’s sufferings. We should destroy all kind of weapons and other killing machines, and manufacturing of new weapons should be stopped. All the nations should root out their differences and should promote peace and harmony among them, so that there is no need of any kind of weapons. Any scientific process that destroys natural environment around us should be eliminated without any delay. Old values and truthfulness in human relationships should be reinstated by getting rid of greed and selfishness.
It can be concluded that soul is very important and the purest part of human existence. It needs love, care and truthfulness on the part of humans to live peacefully with the body. However, if human beings are trapped in this materialistic world and waste their time in seeking modern luxuries of science, soul suffers indefinitely as it is deprived of the care and love it needs. Science has helped man to invent many ways to kill others, and destroy things around him again peace loving soul suffers in solitude. Scientific knowledge is good and peaceful in its true spirit. However, it is used by some evil minds to wreck havoc upon humanity. Thus, humans should mend their ways otherwise soul will keep on suffering in today’s world.
