Sun : Brightest object in the Sky
The Sun, being the brightest object in the sky, has a magnitude of 26, followed by the full Moon at magnitude 11. Objects with a magnitude of 6 or less can be seen without optical aid under ideal observing conditions away from all local lighting. Sirius: Brightest Star in the night sky 1.Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. At magnitude -1.46 (the lower the number, the brighter the object), it outshines all other stars handily. Found in the constellation Canis Major, the Big Dog, Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star. It lies a relatively close 8.6 light-years from Earth, contributing to its brightness. 2.Canopus is the second brightest star in the night sky and lies in the southern constellation of Carina, shining at magnitude -0.72. It lies 74 light-years from Earth. Venus: Brightest Evening/Morning Star Venus (Greek: Aphrodite; Babylonian: Ishtar) The planet is so named probably because it is the brightest of the planets known to the ancients. Venus is usually visible with the unaided eye. Sometimes (inaccurately) referred to as the "morning star" or the "evening star", it is by far the brightest "star" in the sky The brilliant star that shines brightly in the west after sunset for a couple hours is the closest planet to Earth. The Evening Star Venus is often considered the Morning Star or the Evening Star, depending on which time of day it is up and dominating the darkness. For example, from mid-February to mid-October 2010, Venus will be the most notable object in the evening sky in the west after sunset. It shines at a stunning -4 magnitude. The only natural objects in the night sky that are brighter than Venus are the Sun and the Moon By far the brightest star in the sky during the evening hours is Venus. Though to the eye it looks like a star, Venus is actually the 2nd planet from the Sun. For the next few weeks Venus is at its brightest and highest in the sky. This combination makes it the most obvious object in the sky after the Sun and Moon. Venus appear as a brilliant yellow star many times brighter than any other star in the sky. It is ~18 times brighter than the brightest star Sirius (located in the southeast) and ~75 times brighter than Capella (the bright star located nearly over head in the evening). It is so bright in fact, that it can be fairly easy to see in broad daylight if one knows exactly where to look. Located 40 degrees above the southwest horizon at sunset, it sets below the horizon around 9 pm.
