Some Electronic Media TREms
TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
Q: What is frequency? A: The rate at which a signal oscillates or a current alternates, usually measured in Hertz (Hz). 2. Q: What is bandwidth? A: The range of analog frequencies or speed of digital signals that can be passed through a transmission medium, such as glass fibers, without distortion. The greater the bandwidth, the greater the information carrying capacity. Bandwidth is measured in Hertz (analog) or Bits Per Second (digital). 3. Q: What is channel? A: The physical medium over which a communications transmission occurs (e.g., twisted pair, optical fiber, air, etc.) 4. Q: What is analog? A: A transmission system that uses continuous waveforms instead of discrete steps to transmit and interpret the signal. 5. Q: What is digital? A: Digital describes a method of storing, processing and transmitting information through the use of distinct electronic or optical pulses that represent the binary digits 0 and 1. Digital transmission/switching technologies employ a sequence of discrete, distinct pulses to represent information, as opposed to the continuously variable analog signal. 6. Q: What is MMDS? A: Multipoint Multi-channel Distribution Service. A wireless, wideband telecommunications service for distributing wideband data (as video channels) principally toward multiple local users (i.e. "wireless cable"). 7. Q: What is multiplexing? A: An electronic or optical process that combines a large number of lower speed transmission lines into one high speed line by splitting the total available bandwidth into narrower bands (frequency division), or by allotting a common channel to several different transmitting devices, one at a time in sequence (time division). 8. Q: What is transmitter? A: An electrical device that generates, modulates and amplifies radio frequencies to be broadcast to distant receivers. 9. Q: What is HDTV? A: High Definition Television (HDTV) is a high resolution TV method supporting a 16:9 screen ratio and Dolby digital surround audio. It has 1080 scan lines (interlaced scan) and is capable of receiving 18 types of digital broadcastings. Thus this method can be said to be capable of clear picture, marginal picture flickering and abundant expression of colotones. 10. Q: What is head-end? A: Refers to the central receiving and distribution point of a cable television. Usually consists of a numerous ground stations to receive satellite delivers programming that is then organized and routed to cable. |
