A Good and Authentic book indeed, but the language used by Syed Ameer Ali is difficult. A Short History of Islam by Mazhar Ul Haq or History of the Arabs by Philip.k Hitti are also best and recommended books.

I second Raja4u ,History of the Arabs by Philip.k Hitti is excellent book no doubt. The spirit of Islam is a good book by Ameer Ali. You may start from that book then move towards Philip.k Hitti if you have time.

Regards,
