Default Analysis of viva score (CSS 2009)

Don't you people think that this year score in viva is very high as compared to previous years, like most persons are scoring nearly 200 marks in viva. last year it was between 140-180. Wat do u think on this? Will this policy be carried over now in coming years?

This year, they have granted huge marks in viva. Most of the candidates have got between 180 to 200. The trend is quited changed as compared to the last year viva marks. In 2008, most of the candidates got marks between 120 to 150 and only few candidates scored near 200 marks in viva. It is really strange that why a sudden shift in trend has been observed. It implies no uniformailty in FPSC scoring trend. Sometimes marks are outstanding and sometimes shockingly low.

Dear Friend, as you know that the present panel has been formed recently and it was everyone's first experience with this new panel.You must be aware of the term "trend" which is very much in vogue in CSS arena. Trends do change annually especially with the change of interviewers and this is the change of trends that everyone of us has witnessed- i.e high marks in interview. There are changes like high marking in one subject while low in the other one. Similarly you must be knowing about one of the former chairman of FPSC who used to fail candidates with 700 marks in written but were not deemed fit for the service by the chairman.
So, this my friend is not an unusual thing and a person who is aspiring to appear in CSS must be aware of such changes beforehand...

You may differ!!!

@Naseemsandhu

Dear, what I was pointing out in my last post was regarding the need of uniformity in FPSC scoring trend. No exam in the world is so much uncertain as is CSS. Many brilliant candidates fail because of such robust change in scoring trend. I consider one of our forum members, RAZ, a brillianat intellectual and he was a strong candidate for the top slot but what FPSC has done with him... I also know candidates who were just below average for CSS standard but they have got good score and merit number. If a candidate appears in exam and gets good score. Now when he apperas for the next CSS attempt with much improved performance how his marks can be lower than previous attempt marks?? It has been seen in many cases that marks of the candidates in different subjects are unpredictible and contrary to expectations.. Atleast FPSC should come to age and should not play with the career of many aspirants of CSS. Scoring standards must be set like all other international exams and uncertainity must be done away with.

This year, there is certainly a big difference the way interviews were conducted and the amount of number given this time. But this is a normal change if you keep in mind different factors. Firstly this was a brand new panel with new all the members are new. Secondly, the pattern usually changes each year. so one has to be vigilant enough to know beforehand the changes occurring with the passage of each year. I personally was interviewed for more than 35 minutes and it was quite a nice interview in the sense that I was confident enough to answer their queries in a very precise manner .and with the help of Almighty Allah I was awarded 206 marks.

Well i wud just like to say that u have to realize that how a person believed he performed in the interview and how the panel perceived his performance to be might not be the same..therefore it wud be wrong to assume that someone who is considered an "intellectual" might actually have done as well in the interview as he seems to think...

As far as I am concerned I think this was expected as the panel was conducting viva in a very mechanical manner. They kept looking at the clock.... Chairman usually took around 15-17 min and the rest of the time was distributed among other members but one thing remained common i.e. mostly the vivas lasted in the proximities of 30 mins. So for me it was always going to be based on the performance in the written portion.

You people might be aware that many similar questions were asked from a number of students like the reasons for inflation, the ways to improve economy, name three prominent journalists from the independence struggle era, what is yellow journalism etc. When interviews started almost all of the candidates were asked the above mentioned questions with a slight variation of words. This was due to inexperience of the panel. As the days progressed the questions by panel became more technical and panel started arguing and cross questioning in contrast to the start of viva where there was virtually no cross questioning and panel accepted the replies of candidates without any comment.

I guess next year people would find the same panel quite a lot more prepared and changed in approach. (This is my oppinion which could well be wrong)

I got 696 in written and just 175 in interview
and this has brought me down to a place of 227 in merit list...
i still dont understand what went wrong in interview... is it possble to judge a person in just 25-30??? its a million dollar question...
is it right to ignore the performance of a candidate in written..???

I agree that CSS is the most unpredictable exam in Pakistan... even more than Pakistan cricket.. hehe
