nihilism Philosophical belief that there are no basic moral values and that existence is without ultimate purpose or meaning. Nihilism is often linked to a rejection of authority and religion. The term is particularly associated with Friedrich Nietzsche and certain forms of existentialism. In 19th-century Russia the term was used to criticize revolutionaries who were not in fact nihilists. (Oxford World Encyclopedia)

nihilism A theory promoting the state of believing in nothing, or of having no allegiances and no purposes. The term is incorrectly used to characterize all persons not sharing some particular faith or particular set of absolute values. (The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy)

nihilism n. In its most extreme form, denial of reality; more generally, denial of objective truth, or radical philosophical scepticism. The word was first used by the Russian novelist and dramatist Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818–83) in his novel Fathers and Sons (1862) to describe the world-view of radical and disillusioned members of the Russian intelligentsia, epitomized by his character Bazarov, who rejected traditional values and sought to destroy all established systems. See also Cotard's syndrome, nihilistic delusion. nihilist n. A person who espouses nihilism. nihilistic adj. [From Latin nihil nothing + Greek -ismos indicating a state or condition] (Oxford Dictionary of Psychology)

nihilism. The extreme view that there is no justification for values and, in particular, no justification for morality. It is sometimes used to mean the active rejection of and attack on such values. The word was invented by the Russian novelist Turgenev to describe young rebels in Tsarist Russia. Ever since, the word has been used to condemn those who refuse to accept certain preferred prevailing values. Philosophically, ‘nihilism’ is often employed as an ominous alternative characterization of relativism and other views that deny the existence of ‘absolute’ moral standards. Friedrich Nietzsche , for example, is often called a nihilist. His case is instructive. Nietzsche is said to be a nihilist because he questions the value of such ideals as truth and morality, but he does so because they eclipse other, more important values. He thus accuses the Judaeo-Christian tradition of nihilistic tendencies by emphasizing the ‘other-worldly’ and rejecting ‘naturalistic’ values. By definition, the nihilist believes in nothing and disdains all values. But it is worth asking, along with Nietzsche, whether any such stance is possible, in theory or in practice. (The Oxford Companion to Philosophy)

Mehvish g, i don't know it in depth but i know that it's a belief in nothingness of world. It's preachers or i should say its believers, believe that the meaning of this whole universe iz nothing. They can be called the deep pessimistic people. They don't bother about religion, conventions, morals, laws, traditions.

Beyond this i don't know much about it.

@Mehvish

Simply belief in nothing or disbelif in values. Its actually the feelings or an attitude that nothing matters any more than anything else. Another annonymous defination is "Nihilism is form of alienation in which the someone gets uppity and will not play the game that the sentient play. It is a form of despair tinged with vanity."
It is often associated with a existential crisis, malaise and emptiness perhaps loosing sense of logic and sanity. No purpose, meaning or essential value of human existence. etc etc.

the philosphy that human existence, existence of this world with all its material and abstract intricacies is useless, futile, meaningless is nishilism.. it was propounded after the cataclysm of world wars; when the philosophers and men of letters saw no Messiah for their help, no God who could resue the suffering humanity and punish the agressors, they cried in desperation that there is no God, no meaning of this world and its denizens are striving uselessly for their life and this world as the two are futile, meaningless; nothing.. and its isnt because of loosing sense of logic and sanity, rather logic and sanity call the existence maningless.. neitszche, bertrand russell and other great logicians, rhetoricians and philosophers term this world so.. in reality this world and its existence has no reality..
