Salam,

I have gone through these books and found them very helpful,
1- David Daiches-- Critical History of English Literature in four volumes,
2- NKM Excellent Literary Essays (100 Essays) including Modern, post modern literature and post colonial literaure.

For Excellent Preparation you need to consult so many of books and extensive internet search. Try to study books related to critical analysis, make comparisons of Authors/writers, their characteristics over different time lines and aspects i.e cross sectional and parallel analysis. I am unable to specify names of books for PMS but here are some of them that might help you.

@ zashh..there are so many books that is in the syllabus mostly i hav read during my masters..is tedwill book covers all..???
what about this book a short history of english lit. by Ifor Evans??

Plz someone tell me how to start preparing for english literature?
I mean from where i should start?
There are so many books.
Should i study the whole history first? Or should i prepare all books of one writer?
I want experienced members to help me about the pattern of study of english literature
