Default sylvia plath.....

'' poppies in october ''

Plath,s work doesnot express what the poetess herself would have wished to express. The vitalistic, positive current of her poetry sums exactly counter to its hysterical, self annihilating force. No poet in recent memory has so explicitly embraced the opposite extremes of existence at once. At one moment plath,s poems express the most intimate contact with nature as we see in poppies in october.plath had her rare moments of direct contact and communication with nature. This happeened usually in her brighter mood.
The poem ''poppies in october'' is an instance of this reaction to nature. The poetess comes uopn a field of poppies.she is charmed by the bright red colour of flowers.
It is clear from the study of her poetic development that plath expresses antithetical attitudes towards existence, alternately speaking for
life and against it.
At one moment the poems are expression of power and vitality,in the next moment what might be called a negetive vitalism, brilliantaly controlling and, simultaneously, harshly denying the claims of life.the magnificence of the poppies survives beneath the deathly sky with its poison, and amid the enervated men under their bowlers.beauty emerges in the midst of a killing nature.
poppies in october is an excellent piece of plath,s poetry. Here she moves into her customery images.beauty is living besides death.poppies are the most beautiful flowers, they give an exciting look in the morning..the clouds that beautfy the sky do not attract the poetess.
she is attracted by poppies.red is usually associated with death and depression. But red in flowers kindles feelings of joy. the poetess is enthralled, as wordsworth was by a sight of''a host of golden daffodils''.but the comparison just ends here, for plath was something quite different from wordsworth in her perception.
she breaks out into an ecstatic exclaimation;
'' even the sunclouds this morning cannot
manage such skirts''
for a moment her mood brightens up.To her the flowers are
a gift, a love gift
utterly unasked for.....
she has used two implicit images for poppies. but what is attractive is ironically transient.so the poem begins with direct appreciation of nature.but they are under grim horror.the unkind sky issues deathly rays upon them.
The men are hostile to beauty, they are hostile to poppies.
The poet identifies herself with poppies and expresses wonder that the killing nature of sky would let them survive?
by a sky
palely and flamily
igniting its carbon monoxides,
The extreme of life and death are found everywhere in plath,s poetry. The poetry fixes itself in our minds through the sheer power of her language.
yet we must_if we are to go on living_reject many of her attitudes. The poetess looks at the redness of the morning clouds and the beauty of women,s coat in ambulance, both are equally attractive yet transient and fleeting.
poppy flowers are gift-a love gift.the hostile sky is bent upon to kill it.A death wish haunts the poet. Men, her father and husband, were hostile to her.even sky didnot like her. This hysterical and self annihilating attitude crushes the poet inwardly
The reader may decide that the death wish Expressed in this poem is more than a wish, that the suicide is actually occuring or obout to occur, especially since she did take her own life.plath,s poems breathes in the atmosphere of a heightened personal myth, yet it generates disturbing responses that are most appropriate to realistic account of sufferings.
the reader can wonder whether she has created a fantasized self-dramatization.
somc critics have taken the view that the poems are directly autobiographicals. the situation however is more complex.plath,s use of personel material serves a crucial and legitimate function into her works.
The rationale for plath,s use of personel material and violent imagery is that she can move into areas of suffering that have not been tapped in other poetry as a result she rejects the effect of impersonality that much modern poetry achieves.she wishes the reader to confront the situation of the speaker so that the immediate data of experience emerge with a terrifying vividness. In this regard the process of identification with a character or speaker occurs. The 'I 'of the poems invites the reader both to witness and to identify with her as she undergoes extreme experiences
oh my god,what am i
that these late mouths should cry open
in a forest of frost, in a dawn of cornflowers''
she feels she hardly deserves the gift
The poem is a combination of conflicting feelings of joy and pain.
The bright life reflected by the flowers in the poem is threatened by the unkind sky darting its deathly rays upon them. The attitude of the people passing by is also sadly indifferent.
eyes
dull to a halt under bowlers
even in the apparent happy mood the poetess is visited by the death wish;as she speaks of the women in the ambulance whose red heart blooms through her coat. To her beauty was always accompanied by death close at its heels, as the beauty of the poppies in the poem is suppoed to be theratened by the fatal rays of sun. There,s a vulnerability again.
If poppy is a gift unasked for then her life is also an unasked life.if she is a poppy she will also suffer and survive and she does not know for how long will she survive. sky is indifferent.sky and sun are both male images.again this is a confessional poem.she has told her myth of life.perhaps she wanted to be pitied but there,s no need to drum it.Man is trapped in cycle of nature.but inspite of this beauty emerges but it is transient.
The sky is not kind as it looks. These ultraviolet rays will destroy the poppies.carbonmonoxide means that poppies can,t bloom .The sun will not allow these poppies to bloom. There could also be a reference to nuclear holocaust.
