Brother if you are going to attempt in Urdu then i have seen a comprehensive book named "Arbi Adab ki Tareekh" by Muhammad Kazim is best of its nature, you can have the Muallaqat's translation copied from any book, Ahmad Ziyat's book "Tareekh e Adab e Arbi" is also a good option. Actually Hafiz Arshad's notes have been compact and only option for the candidates, using them has been more because of its being only option in the past then being a good option, so for a comprehensive discourse, above mentioned books are of great importance. If you want to attempt in English language, still you will find these books very useful as you can prepare in Urdu and attempt in English plus quoting the verses from them.
