q. describe the factors that determine the character of internal public in newspaper organization? CE-2012

q. In the light of karl marx media theory: analyze the role of at least 3 tv channels with the special reference of flood disaster. what is national development? and how media can play role in national development. CE-2012

Karl marx theory

According to karl marx media theory, capitalist society is one of class domination. media acts as a ideological super structure where different ideas of different classes struggle, but the domination remains in the hands of the ruling class. on the other hand, a false illusion is internalized and socialized into the mass. according to the classical Marxist, media acts as a “means of production” which in a capitalist society is in the control of the elite or “ruling class” and the media functions to produce “false consciousness”

Marxism theory and flood disaster

As a pillar of the state, the media is playing a criminal role, strengthening the ideas of the ruling classes, who are constantly repeating that this crisis is solely natural. Petit bourgeois emotionalism is instilled to compensate for the anger developing against the rulers.
Pictures of hungry, downtrodden women and children fighting each other over a bag of flour were shown and appeals were made to the already impoverished masses to donate money in the bank accounts of the prime minister, president and other high ups, while a few personal accounts of the elite are stuffed with more than enough cash that could finance the whole relief and rehabilitation challenge. In return the media is getting advertisements with handsome amounts of money. This is a two-way business between the media and the right wing, while the victims of the flood are served contaminated food infected with fungus.
In any class society the media cannot be impartial. It serves the interests of the dominant classes and tries to suppress the voice of the exploited classes. During these disastrous times, while the so-called leaders are advising people not to protest and accept their fate, they are increasing their attacks on the workers with massive redundancies in the telecommunication, railways and other sectors of industries. Prices have risen astronomically during this disaster resulting in huge profits for the ruling classes.

Geo tv:
As a result of massive flooding and resultant damage, geo tv organized a show ”pukaar” to raise funding to help out the affectess. Throughout the show, they repeatedly showed miserable images evoking sympathy of the emotional country men to contribute generously. imran khan made quite a show distributing 15 truckloads of relief goods and advocating his “generosity” to gain public support for the next elections.

Ary

Similarly, ary also arranged a show for raising funds for the flood-stricken mass and dr shahid masood succeeded in collecting an impressive sum of 65 million rupees. the role of the army in relief efforts was exaggerated to rebuild its tarnished image. Army personnel were shown, saving lives of people with helicopters. Right-wing leaders were highlighted while distributing relief goods.

Hum tv

Imitating the behaviour of other tv channels, hum tv was also not much behind in this regard. a telethon was arranged to raise the funds and celebrities were invited. instead of revealing the inadequency of the disaster management teams, these celebrities requested the already poor and inflation hit mass to open up and help the flood affected people.

National development:
development that is a general or specific strategy whose goal is to help build up various areas within a nation.

Role of media in national development
• Media should promote unity and spirit of nationalism among different provinces
• It should not give air to sectarianism
• It should project a positive image of the country to uplift her prestige country in comity of nations
• It should promulgate moral and cultural values
• It should not glamourise crime, terrorism or violence
• It should act as a watch dog to keep a check on corruption, monopoly and inefficiency
• It should educate the masses
• it should instill the feelings of patriotism and respect for country men
• it should promote tolerance for other beliefs, ideas and ideologies
• it should censor cheap, gaudy and vulgar shows, dramas, songs etc
Dr M qaiser, vicechancellor of Karachi university also highlighted the role of media as “vital for national development”

Conclusion: media plays a very crucial role in the life today and therefore it is regarded as the “fourth pillar”. its power is at par with the nukes. according to karl marx theory, media acts as a a “means of production” in the hands of the ruling class.this was also observed during flood disaster management where prominent tv channels geo,hum and ary digital overemphasized the role of army and politicians. Media should act responsibly and play a conducive role in the national development.

.9 suppose you have developed a new diet drink and are ready to market it.develop a research study for identifying the element topics that should be stressed in your advertisement. CE-2012

Hypothesis: to identify the elements that should be stressed in a diet drink advertisement.

Introduction: advertisement word originated from the latin “advertere” which means to divert.advertisements are not a new phenomenon. infact, history manifests the fact that even Greeks ,ancient Egyptians and romans also used advertisements.technology however, has transformed everything including the methods used for advertisements. traditional advertisement methods such as bill boards and newspapers have become obsolete now. nowadays, producers of products try to advertise their products through social and electronic media. advertisements today, have emerged as a multibillion industry and has a deep impact on the society. As producers have developed a new diet drink and now they want to advertise it therefore this study is conducted.
The present study is aimed at identifying the factors in advertisement which appeals to the general public. in this study, observational, interview and survey method will be conducted.
The results of the study will help the producers develop an effective advertisement.

Methods:
in order to identify the elements to be stressed in the advertisement, multiple strategies would be adopted. survey method, interview method and observational methods will be used to make an appealing advertisement. in survey method, written questionnaires will be distributed amongst the general public and they will be inquired about the factors that attract them to a particular advertisement such as testimonials of celebrities or famous personalities, or jingles, detail of the product, impact of the product on health, mention of the price in the advertisement etc. in interview method, people will be directly inquired about the factors which in their view makes an advertisement successful. they will be also be inquired about what they would like to see in a diet drink advertisement. in observational method, the researchers will go to various stores and observe the purchasing trend of people in drinks.on the basis of the observation, they would then design an advertisement
Literature review:
previous literature would be studied to identify the methods that have proved successful in developing an attractive advertisement. Effort would be made to identify the factors in an advertisement that propel the people to buy a certain product.

Data
Data will be collected from interview method, observational and survey method an result will be developed on basis of it.

Hypothetical results:
the results obtained show that a large majority(65%) is attracted to the testimonials of celebrities in an advertisement. 25% people showed an inclination towards the jingles used. only 10 % felt that inclusion of details i.e price, health impact, list of contents makes an advertisement successful.

Conclusion: a successful diet drink advertisement should include some famous celebrity, preferably a female model or actress and better still if it is an Indian model or actress. in addition, there should be a strong melodious jingle and it should provide important details of the product.

i felt this is the demand of the examiner in this question.comments and corrections are highly encouraged.

Comment newspaper readership in Pakistan . It is other part of the same question which I ignored that is specified for Pakistan`s society . If newspaper are important (my stance) , then I have to tell people are taking interest in it or buying newspapers. If yes , then good and will suggests measures to increase further circulation . If not , then I have to tell why readership is declining . It is commentary according to the stance which is taken in earlier part of a sentence .

If you are confused for a particular question , divide it and then assemble the divided parts of a question ,you will get what examiner has demanded actually .There is two kind of publics in organizations that is internal(employees) and consumers (media, govt , buyers and distributer etc ). Now focus on character , ponder character is good or bad . If good then tell factors and if bad then tell reasons. Hope , you will be able to make outline by yourself .

Another reason which hinders its progress in Pakistan is that most firms are sole proprietorship.Their proprietos want to have complete control over the firms policies and mostly they fellow the decades old policy of presenting what they think best for the public and not foreign products have been favourite with our people.
Role of public relations

To harmonize public and government

Our government like other countries,is them biggest user of PR.Each ministry has its own PR department.Their function is to inform public about the policies, plans and achievements of the departments.Their role is non-political.Also,their duties are to inform and educate the public and legislation, regulations and all matters.which are directly related to public.
Each minister in our country has its public relation offer, who performs his duty to harmoise the department with public and press.

To increase sales

The other goal of public relations is to create and maintain favourable attitudes of the public toward the company and its products. These attitudes eventually translate themselves in terms of increased sales. If the public is "unsold" on a product,it simply will not buy it.The first step in creating this sympathetic attitude is to inform.People may believe that two-stroke motorcyle is more useful than that of four-stroke.If that is so,the PR man has his work cut out for him.Advertising will do part of the job,but that is only one of the tools he will use.He may faster across country race or fuel economy competition to show the benefits of four-stroke engine motorcyle.

To reduce ill feeling

The PRO works hard to ameliorate adverse publicity.A batch of a company's product may have been improperly mixed and a poison may have found its way into the mixture. The result may be the death of many household pets who ate this food. The PRO'S task is to alert the public fastly. For this he cannot resort to publicity,It is not certain enough. He must use advertising because it absolutely necessary for him to control every ward that is given the public.

Leadership

No company would knowingly avoid a position of leadership in its field if it can be attained. It is a commanding positiion to hold in any industry or group and once reached,It must be zealously guarded. It is part of the task of public relations to convey to the public the facts of leadership wherever they exist,it may in the research department, the sales division, the management employees relation areas, the stockholder elationship,or in some other phrases of the firm would help bring it prestige.

PR-fact finding and research

Public relations programme begin and end with research,in the planning stage, before the preparation of the message or selection of the media, the public relation expert obtains all the facts he can about the public or publics with which he wishes to communicate. He does this by conducting some form of survey which will give him a fairly accurate picture of public opinion and public tastes.

Public opinion polls

The sample survey enables the professional fact-finding organization to obtain accurate pictures of the attitudes of a large group of people by talking to a small representative group. This method is accurate if the people interviewed are truely representative amd the questions are exact and understandable.whether he depends upon such surveys or upon his own careful investigation and personal contacts, the public relations expert decides on the basis of the facts obtained what publics he must reach.

News research

Another form of research that pays dividends to the PR man is for material in and about his organization. These will make his publicity releases more desirable to the media.A new development in manufacturing processses may be of interest to a limited number of news paper readers, while alittle more digging on the part of the public relation sperson might unearth a human interest story connected with the new process that an editor will heartily welcome.

Public Relations practitioner

Public relations was not used until the 20th century, but the practice of public relations extends far back in history-pobably to the time that social groups first formed.Direct evidence exists that public relations was being practised over 4000 years ago.A cuneiform tablet excavated in iraq served as a bulletin to tell farmers how to harvest, sow, and irrigate their crops;in many ways, this tablet was a forerunner of the many notices released by the united states. The commentaries of julius caesar ae also cited as skilful examples of public relations in action since they helped persuade people that caesar was a great and able leader and thus paved the way for his takeover of Rome. The Greeks and Romans also used public relations skills to promote their cultures.

Tools of public Relations

Telling the story

When it comes to communicating its message to the public.PRO'S does not have a technique of its own but uses the mechanics.Newspapers surveys of regional likes and dislikes among editors must available to PRO.If a publicity man's stories and pictures are in tone witht he interest of the newspapers there will be little need for rewriting. It follows, then, that the company wishing to reach the public through the newspapers and radio will fashion its newspapers messages as they would be done by newspapers writers and photographs, similarly,in writing the radio messages the firm will follow the more conversational less stilted approach of radio broadcasting.

Magazines

Another meduim for publicity by the printed word is the magazine, the national circulation and general appeal magazine,as well as the business paper, religious periodical, journal and professional publication reaching specialized audiences.Alhough magazine publicity can be handled much like newspaper publicity, the accent in general magazines is more on the entertainment feature, while the 'smaller' moe specialized magazines will be friendlier toward the article that is newsworthy for their specific audiences.

Books

By books is meant publications varying in appearance from packet size pemphlets to leather-boubd portfolios of drawings, photographs or maps, because they are more voluminous, more complete and detailed or designed for more permanent use then the average printed piece.Involving all the techniques of printing, books might include annual reports of a company
to its stockholders, technical reports to other manufacturer or scientists, histories of business on the occasion of their 25th,50th,100th anniversary, and a wide range of informative and instructional booklets fo employees, visitors, editors in need of background data etc.

Radio

Radio is also a tool of public relations.Radio reaches into places beyond the scope of the newspapers, almost all cars are equipped with radio set. Also, radio transmissions reach in the remote areas of our country, where newspapers cannot. The "wireless" is a powerful meduim because it uses human voice to a great extent to transmit its message, giving it the personal touch missing from the printed word.

Television

It has also tremendous force as a publicity meduim. It promises to become the most potent of all mass communications media, for it combines the printed word, the spoken word, pictures in motion, colour, sound into one.Amazing results from advertising via television have become everyday occurrences.

As with newspapers and radio, the public relations expert tailors his techn iques to fit the peculiar requirements of TV,whether he wants to reach a nationwide audience through national network.

Television

To put over urgent message,a telephone campaign can often secure immediate and impressive results. It should be used with discrimination in order to destroy the urgent appeal.

Direct Mail

A term for printed advertisement mailed directly to potential buyers, direct mail is also greatly used for the discrimination of publicity.its effectiveness depends upon the quality of the mailing list to which it is sent.A personal or semi personal letter correctly addressed to individuals is a most effective public relations tool.

Films

Telling the public relations story by means of motions pictures, film slides, tapes recordings and closed circuit television is a familier technique in most of the advanced nations' large sales and manufacturing organizations. In addition, there are the fascinations of moving pictures, colour, and sound to get and hold the audience's attention.Well-prepared and intelligently used, such public relations tools usually pay for themselves in spite of their relativey high cost.

Exhibits,Fairs,Open houses

Familiar advertising tools, exhibits and fairs, which take the company before the public, help to acquaint people with facts favourable ones,to be sure - and thus gain their good will.Open houses which bring the public to the company are effective public relations tools for the company or organization seeking closer contact and better understanding with the general public, its customers, and employee's families.
q.4 Have newspapers lost their importance after the fast growth of cable television and social media in Pakistan? Comment.
Newspaper readership in Pakistan
A private market research company, MEMRB, estimates that, in 2007, approximately 14.6 million Pakistanis read a newspaper at least once a week. The % indicates those from the estimated 14.6 million reading the newspaper at least once in the past month.press in Pakistan is dominated by jang news.the most popular English daily is dawn news, founded by quaid-e azam mohammad ali Jinnah himself.

year 1997 2005 2006

sindhi 44 80 35
punjabi 0 (increased to 18 by 1998) 5
balochi 2 8
pushto 20 34

popularity of newspaper in pakistan
According to the latest edition of the trivia book Top 10 of Everything 2011 by Russell Ash, Pakistan has the 10th highest newspaper circulation in the world!
We may not think of ourselves as newspaper reading people, but seems like newspapers do sell!
the general perception is that newspaper circulation has been pathetic in Pakistan but the numbers quoted in this book and taken from surveys of UNESCO put Pakistan at number 10 in the world in terms of the highest circulation of newspapers
The role of newspapers in a new media world
All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) decided to hold the South Asia Media Summit (SAMS) to celebrate 60 years of existence
The role of social media as a news outlet populated by multiple citizen journalists combined with competition among TV news networks to break the latest story, means that newspapers are no longer a primary news source.Newspaper circulation appears to be declining as a result of increasing competition from TV, radio and news websites on the internet. Reliable circulation figures for newspapers in Pakistan are hard to come by.
statistics of F.B.S
According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics in Islamabad, the average daily sale for all Pakistani daily newspapers fell to 6.1 million in 2008, from a peak of 9.9 million in 2007.
In the context of TV, Hameed Haroon, CEO, the Dawn Media Group pointed out “many people feel that the electronic media’s presentation of news is more exciting so they don’t buy a newspaper,”
CONCLUSION:
ALTHOUGH THERE IS A DECLINE IN THE READERSHIP AND SALE OF NEWSPAPER TODAY,BUT STILL THERE IS SUFFICIENT APPETITE FOR NEWSPAPER IN PAKISTAN
Dear sadafnoorelahi good effort but your answer is not self explanatory. Add more details in it. always write in a explanatory ways. give details of each things like you have mentioned MEMRB; give details of it like mentioned about the function of MEMRB.
q.8 Press freedom and responsibility go hand in hand in a democratic society. Comment
“liberty means responsibility. that is why most men dread it “George Bernard shaw
press freedom : liberty to think and express oneself i.e speech, writing and thinking .it also ensures the liberty to think and act without any restriction or control from outside along with the freedom of use of required devices and free press means.
Press responsibility: press has certain rules of ethics and do’s and don’ts to follow. these are also called as canons of journalism.
Interrelationship of democracy and press
Press and democracy are intertwined. while press is the voice of people, democracy is the government of people. Perling one will automatically endanger the other instituition. history corroborates the fact that the press of a time reflects the political structure of the country. it is believed that as in Pakistan, democracy has failed to flourish in the true sense of word, therefore the press too has suffered numerously.
Dependence of democracy on press
Democracy is made possible by the flow of information. if the media is restricted, censored or hindered in any way then the populace would remain ignorant: of their rights and duties. this also reduces their ability to play a conducive role in the betterment of the society.
Free press-ingredient of democracy:
Free press and electronic media is an essential ingredient of democratic polity because only the source of information can keep not only the information flowing but also ensure constant dialogue between electors and elected. An analysis of the state of press freedom in historical perspective of the country reveals that one of the factors responsible for semi independent state of press is failure of democracy.
Responsible media-an essential of democracy
Just as every coin has two sides, similarly press too has two facets, freedom and responsibility. media being the fourth pillar of state also has a heavy responsibility. there are certain ethics of media channels and press to shape the discipline of journalism so that they seek the truth and convey information ,ideas and opinions.
The experience of the last decade in Central Europe, for example, shows that mass media served decisively in the construction of the civil society and in censuring the authoritarian trends of some politicians or parties. Also, it corrected and continues to correct, the excesses, negligences and management errors in the countries with a consolidated democracy.
Similarly, in the recent elections of May 11, media has played a responsible role in the establishment of a democratic government by highlighting the demands of the general public and advocating the agenda of the political parties.
conclusion
free and responsible media is necessary for the promotion of democracy.
When journalist /anchors / media intellectuals behaved responsibly they had been murdered . 2011 have been recorded worst for journalist because of their responsible attitude . But excluding , journalists hide and bargain news for personal interests. This irresponsible attitude is depicted in drama ''Kafir'' where Humayun syed showed how media is irresponsible . Media in democratic is freed whereas in socialist society media can not perform its function having all information in the hand of government. When mass media is freed , then it needs capital which is invested by business tycoon and corporates dealers .So there is hot debate who controls information.

What Chmosky says:
1) Propaganda is to democracy what violence is to a dictatorship.

8) Democracy in America is not functioning in an ideal sense but more in the sense that Lippmann noted in Public Opinion (where a specialized class of about 20 percent of the people -- but who are also a target of progaganda -- manages democratic functioning) and, in effect, are under control of a power elite, who more or less own the institutions. The masses of people (80 percent) are marginalized, diverted and controlled by what he calls Necessary Illusions.

When media news coverage of issues is bias in favor the status quo, these are the results:
1. ownership of media is held by major corporations with interests and goals similar to power elite elements of society
2. people with different views, "dissenting voices," are not heard much
3. the breadth of debate is limited
4. the official stance and institutional memory prevail and become history
5. people's interest and attention are often diverted away from issues about which they could become concerned

At this stage of history, one of two things is possible: Either the general population will take control of its own destiny and will concern itself with community interests guided by values of solidarity and sympathy and concern for others, or alternativ ely there will be no destiny to control.

"As long as some specialized class is in position of authority, it is going to set policy in the special interest it serves. But, the conditions of survival and justice require rational, special planning in the interest of the community of the whole (and by now that means the global community).

"The question is whether privileged elites should dominate mass communication and should use this power as they tell us they must, namely to impose NECESSARY ILLUSIONS to manipulate and deceive [whom THEY believe are] the stupid majority and remove them from the public arena. "The question, in brief, is whether democracy and freedom are values to be preserved or threats to be avoided. In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, democracy and freedom are more than values to be treasured; they may be essential to survival."

.9 suppose you have developed a new diet drink and are ready to market it.develop a research study for identifying the element topics that should be stressed in your advertisement.

My dear

Research survey focus on :

1. demographics
2. Psycho graphics

It shows age , sex , %of males and females , literacy rates , economic condition , capital investment of the area , people interest ; either people are obese or skinny or they just want to get their figure in shape . They go to gyms , parties or clubs or not .. You have to show all these facts keeping the fact you are residing (for example) in Karachi or you want to advertise your diet drink all over the Pakistan , then must show over-view of Pakistan`s society and in case of world ( whole world as well ) : after introducing you have to tell or mold the elements according to demographics which will advertise or boast up the sale .
zohaib your notes are very good and up to date but how your PR notes can be used to answer this specific question is beyond my understanding. kindly point out the answer with reference to this specific question.

q. describe the factors that determine the character of internal public in newspaper organization?

q. In the light of karl marx media theory: analyze the role of at least 3 tv channels with the special reference of flood disaster. what is national development? and how media can play role in national development.

Advertising is always done by research by companies who promotes particular brand . Even you may tell the audience in research of various brands and can name your diet drink particular name . Question demand research study which is actually your aptitude about society with respect to advertising. For example , coca cola , pepsi and 7up were major brands ,now sprite, diet sprite and dew have been introduced . If population have people with Heart problems like high blood pressure , higher heart beat then diet drink can advertise best plus area having people of 35+ age .

Watch dog journalism is located in all the media like .T.V, radio, newspapers, magazines and internet etc. It provides the supply of crucial information that public must have "in order to prevent the abuse of power".It brings forth those people who exploit the power. it sustains the order against disorder. It is opposite to propagandists who are loyal to the ruling power and elites. In order to perform the prominent role by the journalists, journalists must need to have distances from the power.

Watchdog role of public and private channel in Pakistan:
Private channel of Pakistan seem to be efficient and satisfactory in their role of watchdog. They come up with the day to day news of political, social and economic wings. Competition is found among these private channels. Every private channel makes efforts to prove that it is best acting body of watchdog.
The watchdog role of private channels like Geo, A.R.Y ,Express news, Dunya .T.V etc. in election 2013 of Pakistan can not be ignored. They provided the full coverage of the election whole the day. They highlighted the ragging issues during the election. They provided the footage of the ragging in different regions of the country. For example
1- In NA-251 (Karachi) unknown mafia tired to ceased the election. Meanwhile in various region of the country election team could not start the election in the right time. Footage were shown clearly to the people . in the result ECP announced to increase two more hours in the net time of election.
2- A man wearing black clothes was explicitly ragging in the NA-250 (
Karachi). Even after being caught ,police let him go easily.
3-Many women were doing explicitly ragging in NA-219 (Hyderabad).
These were the few examples of the watchdog role of private channels. But various footage were came forth by these channels to the public. These footage of ragging by these channels portrayed the inefficient and unsatisfactory management of election by the ECP.
Furthermore the Sikander Hayyat scandal whereby a man accompanied with his wife and two children driven out into middle of the Constitution Avenue of Islamabad .He fired out at the police .Police could not control this man even having passage of the more than five hours. A Brave man named Zamard Khan ended the sense. Private channels showed the complete sense. Hence the watchdog role of these private channels presented the failure of the current government security policy.
In addition private channels organize the various talk shows where the bold and skilled personality of anchors raise the voice. They criticize in favor or against the numerous issues and events of government, political and social.
Here are some of them.
(i) "Khara such" by A.R.G News
(ii) "Faisla Awam Ka" by Geo News
(iii) "Kal Tak" by Express news
(iv) "Capital Talk" by Geo News
(v) "News Hours" by Sama News

Lapdog :
Lapdog is the person or group of people who are easily controlled by the others.
Lapdog Journalism:
Lapdog Journalism means bodies of the journalists keep away the vital secrets from the public. They do not show them to the public. They do not criticize on the illegal political, social, government events, activities and scandals because of the close relation with the ruling power and officials.

Lapdog function of the private channels of Pakistan:
Almost all Pakistani private channels seem to be manipulated by the some power groups in some extent. They are working on the agenda of US, British and India. Almost all the anchors are paid due to their lapdog role by the politician, businessman. Malik Riaz the chairman of Baharia Town Lahore has bribed the many Media anchors to hide the corruption from the people of Pakistan and to give the negative impression of the chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhary. Why media didn’t expose this person? It is because these media are paid by the power groups. A leaked footage of show on “Dunya News” in which Mubashir Luqman and Mehar Bukhari conducted planted the interview with Malik Riaz. In this show in the commercial break talk about with the Malik Riaz to be asked the planted questions. Mubashir Luqman said to Malik Riaz,”give me Villa as you gave to the Hamid Mir”. This show portrayed the dual face of the anchors how Hamid Mir and Mubashir Luqman are making fool to the audience. Anchor sold them to businessmen, politicians and religious groups. No one is clear. Public watch them and think out they are doing this for them.
Meanwhile All Pakistan newspapers society and council of Pakistan newspapers editors have never opposed the policies of paying the expenses of the journalists accompanying officials on national and international tours .journalist are enjoying the benefits of the close association with the officials.
Last year about 21 journalists were exposed in allegation of receiving handsome bribe from Ex-Prime Minister Gillani.

Conclusion:
The Pakistani private channels are just the source of business for their owners whose aims are to earn profit in handsome amount. They act as watchdog in the race of competition with other channels by proving that they are serving the nation in the optimum way. They act as lapdog for sake of maximum profit by distorting their duties and accountabilities. These channels aims are not to serve the nation but to serve the owners.

SADIA SHAFIQ what do you say about my approach to this question?

Qurban Ali Qureshi Wednesday, October 09, 2013 02:18 PM

Q.discuss the importance of people's participation in the process of development and subsequent role of mass media

SADIA SHAFIQ what does the examiner want to ask from this question?
Explain functions of mass communications with relevant examples

Mass communication is the study of how individuals and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time.
the basic functions of mass communication are:
1. Informing:
The most important function of mass communication is dissemination of information to the public primary through news media-electronic and print. Information diffused through these channels (media) is about new events, products, changes in policies, ideas, philosophies and so forth. Mass media are particularly effective to spread current information having news values. nowadays, social media has also started playing an effective role in providing news.
There are many channels that provide information specifically about new inventions, and discoveries . certain others are playing an effective role in propagation of religious views such as QTV or madni channel. At the same time, there is a rat race among many tv channels and radio channels to break news first.
2. Persuading:
Persuasion is another function of mass media. Because of its having persuasive potential, both electronic and print media are used for advertising products, services, business, charities, or for political campaign. social media has started to replace the conventional agents of mass media like radio and television in a bid to attract advertisers.
Many product sponsors hire electronic and social media to advertise their products and services to a large audience.by the use of colourful and melodious jungles, electronic media tries to win over more consumers to a product.
Such as the jingles "ladoo k lashkaray jag mug kapray saray” and
“kabhi kabhi dag tu achay hotay hain” gained instant success.
similarly,in magazines, and newspapers, colourful and graphic advertisements of new and improved products are displayed which stimulate the feelings of the audience and persuade them to buy the product.
3. Entertaining:
Entertainment is the most common function of mass communication. When used for entertainment, the mass media publicize such programs as are pleasurable to the consumers or at least they provide the audience with some sort of escape of diversion from anxieties of daily life.
For example, Newspapers for this purpose may include comics, crossword puzzles and the like. Televisions may show situation comedies, drama, variety shows, etc for example a decade ago it was a norm of almost every Pakistani family to watch 8’0 clock drama .nowadays, this trend has been replaced by the morning shows.now women remain glued to tv in the mornings.Radio entertainment primarily consists of music, talk shows, etc.

conclusion:
mas communication is to communicate to a larger audience using elements of mass media.it has many functioons, information, entertainment and persuasion.
Economical impacts of mobile packages advertisement:
Mobile packages of call and SMS are not free of cost. Youth waist precious money in this evils and unnecessary activities. Average amount spent is 500 to 800 rupees in a month per person. According to the some estimation 120 million mobile phone subscribers in the Pakistan that makes Pakistan fifth largest mobile phones market of Asia. Due to immense uses of mobile packages, the expensive mobile is becoming the status symbol. Youth is not giving proper time to their business and jobs due to which productivity is affected.
though I am not at home in this subject but I guess it is only explaining one side of the coin . like in question they have asked for SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS and in YOUR ANSWER you have more focused on SOCAIL AND BAD IMPACTS , I guess you should add both good as well as bad( which you already have discussed very well). and end up concluding it with your own opinion of this topic either bad or good ,as you like it.
good impacts and economic impacts are missing. to best of my knowledge.

exclusively -overall your efforts is good but you have given the main points of the social and economical impacts of the mobile package advertisements. i think you should elaborate the points with some related details. i thinks only highlighting the main points is not good tactice of answering the questios, details inclines the examiner to the good marks. one thing more mentioning the social and economic impacts separatly is good practice. you have mixed the both. you can even contradict to my opinions.best of luck.

Due to short of time, I could not explain the outlines fully. If had I got ample time would have attempted it fully. And yes, you are right that economic and social impacts are to be attempted separately...Thanks..

Q.8: Public Relations is deliberate, planned, and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organization and its public. Explain.

outline:
- definition:
- aims of the public relation
- advantages of the PR:
- conclusion

Public Relation:
No doubt in saying that "Public Relations is deliberate, planned, and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organization and its public". it is best and actual definition of the public relation that completely describes the public relation. Public relation is intentional, planned, systematic and sustained activity designed in details depth and survey of the public and the products or services by the management of an organization to gain the mutual understanding between the organizationand and public in the effective way. below are some intentional aims of the PR:

3- to provide communication between the organization and the public.
4- to persuade and impress the audience
4- to find the new trends and features of the products by communicating with customers and asking them for their suggestions and opinions.
To create and increase demands of the products and services can not be achived simply advertisments and selling the products . It requires the good image and reputaion of the organization on which the customers can trust. Positive image and reputaion are builed when the organizations perform their services in the best and optimum ways. To create good will and reputaion ,organizations arrange and particpate in the different public events. organizations organize the various events in universities and public gathering places. They highlight the features of the products and services. They solve the problems and issues of the customers to establish and maintain the mutual understanding between the organiations and the public. To find the new trends and features of the products organizations communicate with customers and ask them for their suggestions and opinions. For all of this intantional, systematic, planned and sustained efforts by the IR specialist and management of the organization is required.

For example if the customers found some defficulties and problems in some services and products of a company ,and company does not provide the communication medium between the customers and the organization to solve their problems and issues ,then surely negative image and reputation will be formulated by the costumers of that company. So to abolish the negative image and reputation the companies' intentional ,palnned, systematic and sustained efforts are crucial to maintain and sustain the mutual understanding between the organization and public .

-Business partners and suppliers giving you more favourable treatment.
these advantages which are produced in the result of the positive image and reputation formed, are the result of intentional ,planned ,and sustained efforts
which are established and maintained by the mutual understanding the the public and organization.

Conclusion:
PR is life blood of the organiations which leads to success and failure of the organiations. To decimate the failure "the deliberate, planned and susatained efforts are required to establish and maintain the mutual understanding between the public and organization".
