Norms are socially approved ways of behaving that are considered normal depending upon the specific situation e.g wearing a suit in a office but on the other hand values are ideas about the correct form of behavior a bit familiar with beliefs e.g human life is sacred.values are inculcated into individuals by a party but norms are already present people acting in their social life just have to identify them and go with its flow. Another thing that we must not forget that if someone breaks values it is morally wrong and maybe discarded from the society but breaking norms might appear funny as it does not fit the context.
Norms= Society
Values= Individuals
Your values will be different from your parents if your beliefs are different.

@ fakhir
thanks for that.....

Both norms and values tell us about what should and should not be done in a given situation, what is expected of us, what will be deemed fit and in conformity to the social order prevalent in the society...but is it that norms deal with the minute, day to day affairs and our behaviour whereas values is more about ideals, little vaguer and more abstract....is it so?

further discussion by other members would also be welcome...especially if you can cite some examples from our society....and the question related to the difference in the values between the parents and that of children....

Values: values define the ways of behaviour one should do that are morally acceptable.For example : we should respect our elders/seniors, we should respect women,we should eat with right hand etc etc.but it is not necessary to do what someone says you should do.some people eat with left hand.but they are not punished for this act.

Norms : Norms are the ways of behaviour that society feels are good and acceptable.that people of a society do. For example : we dont eat/drink anything that is not acceptable is our religion as well as in our society,it is norm of the society. but if we go abroad and eat the same thing nobody will say anything because it is acceptable there i.e. society's Norms.

Example for your Second Question is :

when our parents were of our age.they were taught not to talk with any girl/boy of opposite gender.there was no system of co-education or combined functions etc.and Currently, it is normal to talk with someone of opposite gender,co-education, Office work etc etc.it is need of today's society.a girl should talk to his male colleagues for group work/research etc.

there are a lot of other examples in our society.

Regards
