Post Gilani declares all-out war on militants

Prime Minister Gilani during an address to the nation took people in confidence over the Swat issue. Nation carried the following story this morning:

In a decisive move, the PPP-led coalition government on Thursday gave go-ahead to the armed forces to quell insurgency in Swat and Malakand Division and eliminate the armed militants challenging the writ of the government.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani while unveiling this decision in late night televised address to the nation announced the formal deployment of troops in Malakand Division to eliminate insurgency from the area expressing his firm resolve that the government will take strict action against militant and terrorist elements.
Prime Minister also announced Rs1 billion for the rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons promising employment opportunities for one member of a family that has lost life of any of its members at the hands of terrorists.
He said the decisions were taken as last resort after holding consultations with the political parties and other stakeholders, adding the government had launched reconciliation process in Swat and efforts were made to resolve the issue peacefully. He said the government accepted the demand for enforcement of Nizam-e-Adl for restoration of peace but regretted that armed militants continued to challenge the writ of the government.
“We adopted the path of dialogue with good intentions and Nizam-e-Adl was enforced with the condition that militants would lay down their arms and peace restored”, he said, adding: “We had faced pressure. We were criticized for such policies but we took the decision for our national interests.”
He said that in order to restore honour and dignity of the country, the armed forces have been called in to eliminate militants and terrorists. “We will eliminate those who have tried to destroy peace of the country,” he said.
He asked the nation to stand behind the armed forces as well as the government to defeat those who have earned bad name for the country. Prime Minister said that army had been called in for decisive action after due deliberations with all the quarters concerned. He further said that the nefarious activities of terrorists and militants to destroy the image of the country had reached the stage where the government felt constrained to believe that action is necessary against them. He said for the economic revival aimed at eliminating poverty and creating employment opportunities, it became incumbent upon government to maintain peace in the area. Prime Minister asserted that the government would not surrender but would force the militants to lay down arms. “We will not compromise. The nation must stand against those who imposed their will at gunpoint. They have held the country hostage,” he said.
Prime Minister Gilani also launched appeal for international help for the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and to enhance the ability of Pakistan’s law-enforcement institutions to meet the challenge.
He urged all the segments of society including politicians, students and Ulema to support the government and the armed forces in defeating the extremists.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan was facing two major challenges that include threat to national security and economic revival.
Prime Minister condemned the incidents of ‘shameful acts’ against women in Swat and other areas at the hands of the militant elements saying this not only earned bad name for the country but also put the lives of the local people under perpetual threat.
He also appealed to the international government to step up efforts to support the government in providing relief to the internally displaced persons of Swat, Malakand, Buner and other areas.

(Daily Nation 08/05/2009)

We hope that this time these are not mere words but they are implemented with full force. Prime Minister is right because the militants had become a canker for the society and it's all but necessary to crush them with brute force.

its really a high time for the government to decide whether to check the designes of militants or to bow before them and i think the decision from the power echelons would be implemented with full enthusiasm and zeal. Because in my opinion they are not only so called @Talibans@ there are other external factors must be involved in this armed battle. Might be Russia, India, Afghanistan through underground combatants.

I request the respected members to come ahead and share their views about this military operation.
As far as my opinions are concerned i condemn this US led military operation in Swat, As the basic objective to eradicate talibanisation can never be achieved through the massacre of inhabitants. It will only force the people to fight against the Govt, against the army no matter if the instinct is their own survival. I am not a die hard fan of talibans, yet i think that military operation can never be a solution to efface the chaos engulfing not only Swat but the whole country. Having heard Gen Kiyani's statement the number of armed people challenging the writ of Govt lies somewhere between three thousand to four, i don't agree in anyways that three hundred thousand people should be sacrificed.

Regards,

Default Crush everyone against the sovereignity of Pakistan!

@Lord Avalon.

I don't agree with your point of view. These so called "Talibans" are creating insurgency in the country. They want to turn our beloved Pakistan into turmoil. When this "mullah" SUFI MUHAMMAD got imlemented Shariah in the Swat then what urged him to demand more, that was, in my opinion, political greed. Why he was not contented to implementation of Sahriah in Swat. He, definitely, has to be contented on that, and if found succesful then this type of system may be implemeted in other areas of the country too. This type of person cannot and should never be regarded as true representative of islam. And such insurgencies in the country should be crushed by an iron hand, and our Prime Minister has taken a very right decision to crush these through military operation. Such Talibans deserve far more than that.

Regards,

@ Lord Avalon

Dear Aspirant...

So far as the concern of military action, it is high time to take this. Despite the fact that I agree to your point of view that military action is not only solution of any dispute, yet we have left with no other choice except that one.

You have seen the increasing influence of Taliban of Sufi Muhammad in swat and the remote areas connecting to swat like buner and dir in the presence of swat pact. Government has fulfilled their demand of Nizam-e-Adl but they haven't laid their arms down and contrarily have started inflowing in remote areas of swat to broad their influence. Government has tried to appease the situation through every nerve but to no avail. Now it is the last resort which Government has adopted.

When the tension between Pakistan and India after Mumbai carnage erupted and Indian government threaten Pakistani government of surgical strikes and of full scale war, that time Sheikh Rasheed said over media.

"Hum nay Atom Bomb Shabrat Par Chalanay ke Liye Nahi Banaya tha"

So is the case with military action.

Regards & Reverence
