Is Pakistan right to say no to joint operations with US?
Pakistan rejected on Tuesday a US proposal for joint operations in the tribal areas against terrorism and militancy as differences of opinion between the two countries over various aspects of the war on terror emerged. The proposal for joint operations in the tribal areas had been floated by US presidential envoy for the region Richard Holbrooke and Joint Chief of Staffs Admiral Mike Mullen during a series of meetings with the civilian and military Pakistani leadership.
During meetings on Tuesday, US officials were told that continuing drone attacks inside Pakistan’s territory were counter-productive and Pakistan requested that drone technology be shifted to the Pakistan Army. US officials were also told that it would be difficult to bridge the trust deficit if statements maligning the ISI kept coming from the US and if US officials kept ignoring the contributions of the Pakistan Army and ISI in the war on terror. Do you think the Pakistani decision to refuse to conduct joint operations in FATA is correct? Should Pakistan’s cooperation with the US in the war on terror be made conditional on the cessation of drone attacks? How best can the US proceed without the support of the Pak Army and ISI? |

@ joint operations
It looks as US is trying to expand its war from Afganistan in to Pakistan.AT the first stage there were increase in Drone attacks, starting joint operation into Pakistan could be the second one.
Its not a conventional war, beeing a gurilla war it needs unique approaches.Drone attacts and cooperation with US has already given reasons for the Talibans to attack on Pakistani soil. There are clear chances that militants will spread all over the country in case of joint operations. And Starting joint operation will further alienate the government. The nine year long war has increased the Terrorism in Pakistan and region as well. The war has already expanded from triabal regions to the whole of the country. It has devestating effects on the economy of Pakistan as well as its people. Its time that we start thinking about real solutions instead of oppening up a new front. There are clear lack of political approaches to end Terrorism. It would be better to start negotiations instead of joint operation.

They have dragged their war to our territory indeed. Recently published book "Obama's Wars" by Bob Woodward revealed that; Obama says to his advisers: "Cancer of Terror lies in Pakistan". So Pakistan should not accept the joint operations proposal as we already damaged us beyond repair.

Well its quite a gamble. At there part of land i.e Afghanistan, they have already initiated dialogues with talibans which is a clear indication of the fact that this war cannot be won through military solutions only.Further if Pakistan accede to their request of joint action, what is the guarantee that they would clean up the affected tribal territory with in one year, the goal they failed to achieve in afghanistan in so many years, as it is already declared by President Obama that American forces will evacuate Afghanistan by july 2011. in short this kind of action will only further add to the troubles of Pakistan and nothing more.

Wash Aathke
At present, what we need most as nation,is to rebuild, what we ourselves have destroyed.Perpetual operations in FATA and Baluchistan have aggravated the quagmire.Any further move in this regard, be that indigenous or joint, will haul the entire nation toward burnout.Joint venturesome against festering and downtrodden tribal will not be productive.Time is ripe for our leaders to call a spade a spade.Treading on others agenda will definitely be a vivisection.

Americans are very cunning people they always thinks first about themselves. On one hand they want dialogues with Taliban and on the other hand they want to use Pakistan on the name of war against terrorism.
