bilal's analysis sounds more justified but still i find a bit tit for tat situation there which in my opinion is a result of his rigidity in domestic dealing (forget about the bipolar proxy fight on the grounds of syria).Paying no heed to ur own ppl always facilitate the political foes both national and international. One must bring gradual and intelligent reforms in a society highly accustomized to western traditions so as to prevent intra national conflict.Otherwise he will end up to be zia of turkey leaving behind a nation to survive in diametrically opposed ideological ghosts looming around.

The Turkish unrest seems to be the result of longstanding political contentions between Secularists and Islamists with Secularists fearing the Islamists might attempt at establishing a dictatorship (see recent endeavors for constitutional reforms in Turkey). Traditionally the army has always meddled in politics to keep the country at Ataturk's path, but Erdogan government has been successful in sidelining them so the secularist anxiety has grown. Reestablishment of Ottoman era barracks at Taksim Gezi Park just seem to have triggered what could have happened anyways. It doesn't look like there is any tit for tat from Syria or Iran; except for maybe the secularists would be fearing that any Turkish successes in Syria might further solidify Erdogan's Islamist regime .

Exclamation depends on the state of the issue .

Erdogan is a democratic leader , not like other ones that have been mentioned . He doesnot fall in the category of dictatorship. Erdogan ranks number 1 in ,eaders all over the world in popularity according to the recent surveys . So , everything has now cooled down . It was only to check the calmness and reaction of Edrogan . And from media perspective when there comes a news about most famous Muslim leader all around the globe , they get a chance and make more bold statements comparatively to other ones . At the end , if Turkey supporting Syria , then reaction couldnot had come in this way .
