Emergency martial law possible in next 48 hours

ISLAMABAD: An important decision regarding an emergency or a possible martial law is imminent in the country within the next 48 hours.

President Musharraf is busy in consulting his associates and legal experts over the issue, whence he has been known to have been advised by his associates to implement a limited emergency, but some are also known to have favored a martial law. However no final decision has been taken in this regard. The factors cited for this sensational decision pertain to current turmoil in the tribal regions of Pakistan, increased acts of terrorism and extremism, and a general scenario of political instability in the Country. Despite the fact that the intent has been refuted by President Musharraf and his spokesman Gen. Rashid Qurieshi, "sources" insist on their "story", claiming that "consultations" are quite active on behalf of the President over the issue. Opposition`s and public reaction is also under active consideration, while his associates have expressed more concern about the possible severe reaction from the lawyers` community and public, while opposition would only (as usual) try to make an issue of it. However, it is likely to create quite a problematic issue for the President, hence he has been advised a careful evaluation and well thought out strategy regarding the decision, and President`s men have advised him to take advanced measures and steps against any possible severe backlash. Sources claim that the situation would be clarified today, Thursday or tomorrow, Friday, while attorney general of Pakistan, Malik Qayyum and (President`s) legal expert, Sharifuddin Pirzada have already met President Musharraf and PM both. It has been learnt that PM, Shaukat Aziz also stands by the decision.

i just love this guy.He is playing political chess so wonderfully that i am anxious whether he was political analyst in army because he has thrown this martial law card on a time where political parties are divided even the strong party like MMA is about to brake.I do not think he took this step in two days .There is no internal bad condition and not like may 12 but he loves tricks. If i am not wrong BB and nawaz cant sit together now as they already insulted each other on television after BBs meeting with musharaf in abu dahabi and if i am not wrong again mushaf disclosed that meeting and BB denied. OMG .this man is a true leader and politician .Go with marital sir,u have the full support of the most disciplaned instituation (The Army) .Man ...u r cooooooooooooool .

I think this is all pressurizing. US and Pakistan have plans and they are working fine on it. We earlier see there is alot of support these radical muslims of tribal area have all around the country. And american and Pak Army found it difficult to eliminat them or fight with them. Every corner of the country is shifthing toward them slowly specially after Lal Masjid debacle, this shift is increasing and people have sympathy with them more and more. Now Pakistani want to tackle with them as they are creating huge mess for our country. American threat to attack pakistan or Fight directly with Al Qaeda is just a propaganda. So that they can win the other peole heart in support of Pakistan Army. In this way Pakistan Army take full fledge operation against them. We have earlier experience same kind of propaganda in 2002-3 when we are against war on terror. So again they are playing the same card on us. Look Hillary today's stament she talked about nuclear program of our country, its not like Iraq and Afghanistan that they easily come here. Already America trap in Iraq,Let hope for the best

Emergency option under study

By Raja Asghar
August 09, 2007

ISLAMABAD, Aug 8: A beleaguered President Pervez Musharraf met his senior aides on Wednesday apparently to consider new moves to tackle an uncertain political situation, including the possibility of imposing emergency that would mean suspension of most fundamental rights, political sources said.

The sources said the situation also figured in informal discussions during a dinner hosted by Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who was quoted by a federal minister as saying the emergency could be imposed.

Population Welfare Minister Chaudhry Shahbaz Hussain told Dawn the PML president informed his guests that emergency had become a necessity because of the prevailing situation.

Speculation about the possibility of a resort to such a desperate move began after the president cancelled a visit to the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday to attend a key joint Pakistan-Afghan tribal jirga and did not abate even after some government spokesmen either denied or said they were unaware of such a move.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will instead go to Kabul to lead the Pakistan delegation at the jirga, which will consider ways to peacefully deal with the raging militancy along the Pakistan-Afghan border.

The speculation was also fuelled by the prospect of an early return home of exiled former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif and its impact on the political climate in the country where many parliament members could switch loyalties and cloud Gen Musharraf's desire to get himself elected as president for another term from the present assemblies.

A petition filed on behalf of Mr Sharif seeking an unhindered return from forced exile is due to be taken up by the Supreme Court on Thursday while lawyers of the self-exiled Ms Bhutto were known to be considering to go to court for the removal of any hurdles.

The president has previously been denying any intention to resort to declaring emergency, which can be imposed under the constitution's articles 232 and 233 that deal with political activities, press freedom and other fundamental rights given by articles 15, 16, 17 and 19.

The government came under heavy criticism during a law and order debate by the National Assembly last week, particularly in the light of last month's deadly military operation to clear Islamabad's Lal Masjid and the adjoining Jamia Hafsa madressah of militants seeking to enforce their brand of an Islamic code in the country and a subsequent wave of suicide bombings killing civilians and security personnel.

The law and order situation also figured during a foreign policy debate that was stretched to a fourth day on Wednesday.

Law and Justice Minister Mohammad Wasi Zafar and presidential spokesman Major-General (retired) Rashid Qureshi denied any decision had been taken to impose emergency.

But Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azim Khan, appearing on a private television channel, said such a course could be an option which could not be ruled out.

Attorney-General Malik Abdul Qayyum said in a similar interview that emergency, if imposed, would not affect the presidential election, which the government says must be held between Sept 15 and Oct 15, while the present assemblies elected in 2002 run out their five-year terms in mid-November.

Prominent lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan said imposing emergency would amount to undermining parliament and the judiciary.

Smile Paradise Lost & Musharaf

Discussion on the Amergency martial law in Pakistan is very hot.
What will happen in future no body knows well. Since the Musharaf came in Prominence in 1999 to till now reminds us about the Miltons Paradise lost. The decision of Satan's expulsion from heaven & Musharaf from the Seat of Chief of Army Staff by Prime Minister of the Time Mian Nawaz Saharif quite resemble.

Musharaf is Determinded like satan not to Bow Down in any circumstances against his opponents. The great consult began was begun by satan to make a Strategy to gain new power, honor & authority again. Same is the Case with Pervaiz Musharaf.

In Islamabad on high end the great consult began to declare the Emergency in the Country so that he might be able to Rule over the Nation & Country as longer as he Could. What will happen in the country Allah Knows Better. I only Pray to Allah Almighty to Save & Stronger Pakistan.

Mushi can do anything to stable his own self with the emerging national problems , he traced almost every party to come up with a solution to the problem (to save his power). His situation is currently dismantled and he is iminent to sink. The people of pakistan are not naive .They are sick of generals .These generals have done enough damage to the country and we as people of Pakistan cannot tolerate a bit from these generals anymore.Pakistan Army rule ke liye tou nai bana tha.On the other hand our so called politicians (those who consider themselves as democrats) are satans in disguise, where preservation of self interest is given priority, for them "hell with the nation" just fillup our own buckets untill we are in power.Anyways the funniest part was when Ch. Shujaat said that they were having gup shup and the media made a big fuzz out of it.I wonder what gup shup he was talking about.Imposing emergency in our sovereign state is gupshup for him.How absurd his comment can be!!!!God bless Pakistan and Not HER enemies (inc. our leaders)

Musharraf decides against emergency

ISLAMABAD, Aug 9(AFP): Embattled President Pervez Musharraf decided on Thursday not to impose a state of emergency in Pakistan, ignoring the advice of aides who wanted strong action to prevent more instability in the troubled nation. Facing the greatest challenge to his leadership since he seized power in a 1999 coup, heopted against the move, which would have postponed elections, Information Minister Mohammad Ali Durrani told AFP. “President Musharraf has decided not to impose the state of emergency in the country as suggested by some political parties and others,” Durrani said. “The decision was taken because the priority of the president and present government is to have free, fair and impartial elections in line with the constitutional requirements,” he said.
