Karachi administrator appointed
KARACHI: After a prolonged deadlock over the appointment of administrators in Sindh, former secretary Local Government and DCO Karachi Fazlur Rehman has been finally appointed as Karachi’s administrator.
This was disclosed to The News by Sindh Minister for Local Bodies Agha Siraj Durrani after he came out of a core committee meeting at the Governor House on Monday. Durrani said there would be no post of the DCO in the city.
“Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah will issue a notification to this effect later tonight,” he added. Once the notification is issued, the local councils and the city council would stand dissolved.
Durrani said Sajjad Abbasi has been made Hyderabad’s administrator. Regarding TMOs,he said the town Nazims in the province will perform duties as administrators in their respective towns.
Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal’s four-year tenure ended on October 16, 2009, while the local government system had a protection till December 31, 2009 under the sixth schedule of the Constitution.
In the last 28 years, 17 administrators have been appointed in Karachi after dissolution of local governments. Among them, two were political administrators while two were from the Army. It may be noted here that Fazlur Rehman had been penalised after being held responsible for the premature issuance of a notification about the appointment of administrators
