I wanted to share with all the members my letter to editor, Dawn which was published today. The link is

This is apropos to Masood Khan’s letter “” (June 25). Israel initiated its blockade of Gaza in 2008 citing security reasons — primarily that Hamas used to fire rockets on Israeli colonies situated in the Gaza. The blockade was sold to the world as a means of stopping the flow of weapons into Gaza; however, as it turned out, it was all a facade. The blockade cut off all food and medical supplies to Gaza. The reality is that this blockade was meant to destroy Gaza economically and force its residents to accede to Israel.

Here I must emphasise that while Israel has recently eased its blockade, all exports out of Gaza are still restricted. The blockade of exports, which world powers and the Muslim world in general have ignored, has virtually destroyed the economy of Gaza, making its residents dependent upon whatever aid they can manage to smuggle in through underground tunnels. Numerous factories in Gaza were forced to shut down when they were denied market access, owing to the blockade of exports. The export blockade confirms the fact that the real intent of Israel was not to stop the inflow of weapons into Gaza but to cripple it economically.

It is time the world forced Israel to stop this inhumane treatment of the residents of Gaza and lift its illegal blockade.
