Dawn, The beauty of Democracy
The beauty of Democracy
Daily Bhulekha
PRESIDENT Asif Ali Zardari intends to host an allparties conference to consider the national situation and to frame policies on the basis of a consensus that may emerge. According to the presidency spokesman no date has yet been finalised. The president has already discussed the conference with the prime minister. The issues to be discussed are political and economic. The basis of democracy is that all national decisions should be taken after a consensus is reached among the parties. In this system the role of the opposition is that it should not allow the ruling party to go astray. The discussions on the floor of the house provide the basis for the next possible steps. Crises are a part of the nation’s life and an objective approach by all parties concerned is the best way to deal with serious situations and problems.
In Pakistan the democratic process has been weakened by the periodical invasions of undemocratic forces which never feel the obligation that they are answerable to the people. And in that atmosphere no need is felt for a national consensus and that is the way of dictators. After Pervez Musharraf, there is a continuous whispering campaign about the failure of the civil government. It is unfortunate that such campaigns are hardly ever present in periods of dictatorship but as soon as a civil government takes over, rumour campaigns are unleashed. This is one of the reasons that important issues are not being handled properly and on time, leading to a worsening of the [overall] situation. The resultant conditions give that much more space to fundamentalism and chaos engulfs the nation. Religious terrorists have already weakened the fibre of democracy, therefore, the need is for all political parties to get together, take stock of the grave issues the nation is confronted with and arrive at some consensus.
Under these circumstances, Zardari’s initiative to call a roundtable conference is praiseworthy. We hope that all the participants will realise just how delicate the situation is and come out with positive results. Reconciling differences and agreement is the beauty of democracy.
