Post The Pitfalls And Future Of Democracy In Pakistan

INTRODUCTION
the opeation of democratic dispensation in pakistan has been a retrogressive experience because politicians have treated democracy like fickle lovers who cannot live together in blissful union but in devouringseparation. a quick scan on our too-brief history reveals thjat each time democracy begins moving smoothly, vested interests feverishly manipulate its breakdown.as a result pakistan is facing the birthpangs of insecurity, deteiorating law and order situation ,political corruption and erosion of authority with the result that sindh and baluchistan are in turmoil ,national economy floundering and national institutions are suffering a considerable damage.
PARADOXICALLY, politicians claim to be painstakingly working for democracy( charter of democracy),yet they have caused irreparable loss both to democracy and national institutions in their lust for power.the culture and character of the dual between the former presidents and prime ministers awfully exposed the hollowness of their claims.

FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DERAILED JOURNEY OF DEMOCRACY
1 conflicts over value system hampers smooth operation of democracy.
2 borrowed structural system of democracy do not conform with our circumstances.
3 informal illiteracy, overrides the process of democratization in the country.
4 collective reasoning do not exist.
5 narrowmindedness and absence of national spirit
6 democratic institutions are not self -sustaing.

RECOMENDATIONS
BY AND LARGE DEMOCRACY IS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES,NOT JUST TO BE TAKEN AS A POLITICAL SYSTEM BUT AS BEHAVIOUR.nation must be made aware of its social obligations towards collective good.the political parties should endeavour for the upkeep of political process because in stagnant politics ,interests group can survive but not a party.following measures should be popularised at the grass-root level for the smooth working of democratic dispensation in the country;

1 EVOLVING NATIONALIST AND ENLIGHTENED LEADERSHIP
a quick scan over political landscape of our country reveals that politicians have been largely unimaginative ,authoritarian and myopic in their approach.as a matter of fact absence of organised and multi tire leadership poses two types of major problems;political agenda CANNOT BE TRANSLATED INTO VIABLE POLICIES secondly POLITICAL LEADERSHIP BECOMES A FOCAL POINT OF NEW ORDER resulting in a personality cult which is detrimental for the promotion of democracy.the presence of enlightened leadership is one of the prerequisites for the success of democracy in the country.

2 CREATION OF ECONOMICALLY VIABLE SOCIETY
pervasive inequality in incomes, massive poverty and heavy dependence on forieign borrowings hampers the process of democracy.conversly educated population with values and skills of industrialisation is more apt to democratic governance.under the circumstances the governments should chalkout workable economic plans for elimination of poverty and under-unemployment through pragmatic education policy.

3 ENSURING SIZEABLE PROVINCIAL AUTONOMY
take ,the fall of decca the end result of authoritarian rule of ayub built on the myth of national uniformity ,eleven years of zia has also accentuated regioal discontentments.measures including grant of freedom of expression and provision of sizeable provincial autonomy pave way for flourishment of democracy.if work is done on these lines whole nation can be knitted into an impregnable fort
.
4 EVOLVING CONSENSUS ON NATIONAL ISSUES
recently we witnessed what happened to kalabagh dam that was purely due to lack of machinery and channels to develop concensus.it goes without saying that belief in democracy eliminates dissention, disagreement and polarization and puts the country on the road to economic prosperity.

CONCLUSION

ELECTIONS ARE JUST THE BEGINNING .they have to be followed by a thorough restructuring of political system and public institutions .rights og citizens should be clearly laid down and officials be brought under these rights.
eric hofferin his book '' the passionate state of mind'' writes'' our sense of power is more vivid when we break a man's spirit than we win his heart'' pakistan offers the ideal mix to illustrate hoffers point ;a procession of power-mongersin the guile of various contradictory ideaologies is presiding over a multitude of broken spirit.to forestall trivialization and isntitutionalisation of the spirits of revolt ,two things are essential ;we should fight away oppurtunism and fanaticism secondly we should ward off fragmentation and restore holistic vision of life ;all that appears to be irreconcilable dualities;science and religion ;technology and poetry work and lisure;theory and practice.
