Musharraf still most popular leader
Musharraf still most popular leader in country, says US survey
Saturday April 28, 2007 WASHINGTON: Some 54.2 percent of Pakistanis said they approved of the way Gen Musharraf was doing his job, according to a poll conducted by the US-based International Republican Institute (IRI). The survey was released on Thursday and was conducted from February 12 to March 7, 2007, questioning 3,997 adult men and women from around 256 villages and 144 urban locations in 65 districts in all four provinces of the country. To the question of which leader could effectively handle Pakistan's problems, 32 percent of respondents said Gen Musharraf was the most suitable leader, followed by Benazir Bhutto (25.4 percent) and Nawaz Sharif (15.1 percent). Less than five percent of respondents considered all other political leaders - including Altaf Hussain, Imran Khan, Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Fazlur Rehman - as leaders who could solve their problems. Province-wise, Gen Musharraf gained 48.4 percent support from Balochistan, Benazir Bhutto 56 percent from Sindh, and Nawaz Sharif 23 percent from Punjab. Most agreed that Benazir Bhutto (65 percent) and Nawaz Sharif (63.3 percent) should be allowed to return to Pakistan. More than 50 percent of Pakistan Muslim League voters also favoured the exiled leaders' return. |

This is just gapshap. The better judge of his popularity is the people of Pakistan. I personally think less than 10 percent ppl support this dictator.

well if that survey is done at white house then definitely he still is but not in his own country, which he has conquered...
secondly he having 48.4 % support in balochistan, not at all, that is just outrageous... i think 98% people in that province hate him to the core, be it balochs, pathans or settler punjabis...

plz keep in mind that the article or survey was published before the unfortunate event in karachi............alot has changed since then.............personally, i think that Musharraf has bitten off more than he can handle............even those people who supported him have now turned their backs on him after the karachi chaos.............it was a failure of the government, plain and simple...................
someone once said," u cant fool all the people, all the time"...........i think the people have finally woken up from their deep slumber.............and the end of Musharraf's reign will soon be witnessed...............

you are completely wrong. According to my personal survey, more than 98 percent of Balochs hate musharraf more than anything else. And what musharraf has done for Balochistan? Baloch ppl do not need Mega projects like Gawadar, and a highway or two. What common man need is employment(for which the setup of industry is necessary), schools and colleges, roads(not highways), hospitals, electricity and gas, and good housings. Tell me what the present or any past govt has contributed to the above mentioned factors. |
